Wawa/Jawaka is characterised by a high level of instrumental skill. Beautiful long, jazz-oriented jams, listening journeys for fans of Zappa. The precursor to Grand Wazoo, recorded in the same year with a large big band, is sometimes ticked off as a prequel - wrongly so, because this little work of art of inspired instrumental mastery, large arrangements and small-scale electronic accessories is well worth being our album of the month, even 50 years after its release.
Especially since Zappa was able to experience a kind of musical rebirth with this album after his fall into the orchestra pit: confined to a wheelchair for months, he had a lot of time to write and compose. Musically, Waka/Jawaka is a continuation of his first jazz-rock record Hot Rats from 1969. After the excursion with the Turtles' singers Flo and Eddie into a vaudeville rock that spilled over into endless stage spats, which many fans considered commercial, the beginning of the 70s saw another turnaround, which was also well received by jazz critics.
It is hard to believe that only six musicians were in the studio here: thanks to sophisticated post-production and rhythmic elements deeply woven into the songs, which were recorded by George Duke, among others, in long individual sessions in Zappa's studio, especially the two 17- and 11-minute instrumental pieces Big Swifty and the bolero-like fading Wawa/Jawaka sound like a large orchestra, especially in this HiRes version - and always fresh and surprising.
