Info for Franck, Haydn, Rachmaninoff
César Franck's Prelude, Fugue and Variation, originally composed for organ and inspired by pieces by J. S. Bach, benefits from Cavaillé-Coll's innovations, which enable the organ to play with virtuosity and colour. Pianist Ivan Yanakov performs it here at the piano, along with two other brilliant works: Joseph Haydn's Sonata No. 31, whose graceful embellishments correspond to the cheerful (and unusual) key of A flat major, and Sergei Rachmaninov's Variations on a Theme by Corelli. Rachmaninov's last work for solo piano, which he composed in France after a break of almost 10 years, is based on the folio theme used by Corelli in his op. 5 and pays tribute to the Romantic composers, above all Liszt, with irrepressible virtuosity and poignant melancholy.
