Info for Distant Light

In his debut album, Janis Porietis features world premiere recordings of works for trumpet and organ by Latvian composers Maija Einfelde, Rihards Dubra, Alvils Altmanis, Ilze Arne, Romualds Jermaks, Dzintra Kurme-Gedroica, Georgs Pelecis and Renate Stivrina recorded at the Riga Cathedral's famous E. F. Walker & Co. Organ during the year of 2020. Porietis is the principal trumpet with the Latvian National Symphony Orchestra as well as an associate professor at the Jazeps Vitols Latvian Academy of Music and the head of it's brass instrument class; he also performs as a soloist and chamber musician. In addition, he is a professional photographer - it seems he has photographed almost every musician in Latvia at least once. Organist Ilze Reine gives regular solo concerts, collaborates with soloists and professional Latvian music ensembles such as the Latvian Radio Choir, the State Choir Latvia and the basso continuo group of the Sinfonietta Riga chamber orchestra. Together with her husband, Aigars Reinis, she has recorded music for two organists; the album was released in 2015 by SKANI.

"The trumpet and organ are a wonderful tandem that reveals a broad palette of musical colour, because the trumpet is one of the few instruments, if not the only one, that can compete with the might of the organ and not remain in it's shadow. These two instruments can convey deep sorrow as well as fantastic joy and elation. The music on this al-bum is like a bright light without a distinct source that fulfils and provides strength to continue. May everyone who listens to this music surrender to the fulfilment of this light. " (Janis Porietis)

Jānis Porietis
Born and raised in Riga, the capital of Latvia - one of the small, but beautiful Baltic States. If you haven't been there yet then it is truly a must see place, if not for the beautiful architecture that has survived through centuries then definitely for the cultural aspects.

I started playing the trumpet when I was about 10 years old and haven't stopped since. It was my first teacher Pēteris Kaldre who taught me the first steps of trumpet. Later I studied with Ēriks Berzinskis and Maija Lāce, as well as Reijer Dorresteijn in Holland and Pasi Pirinen in Finland. Eventually I graduated my first teacher’s Pēteris Kaldre trumpet class in the Latvian Music Academy. After that I had the opportunity to study with Steve Leisring at the University of Kansas were I received my Doctorate of Musical Arts.

Ilze Reine
was born in 1970 in the city of Smiltene, Latvia. She attended the piano class at the Cēsis College of Music, and, at the same time, studied organ with Lelde Krastiņa. She continued her organ studies at the Latvian Academy of Music with Larisa Bulava (bachelor’s degree in 1997, Master's degree in 1999), at the Hochschule für Kirchenmusik (Herford, Germany), and attended master classes held by J. Laukwik, H.Vogel, B. van Oosten and E.Kooiman. Ilze Reine has given concerts in Latvia, Germany and Hungary. Simultaneously with her studies, Ilze Reine has worked as an organist of the Evangelic Lutheran parish in Rauna, but since 1997, she is the organist and the church choir leader of the St. John's Church in Riga, being also responsible for the musical life of the parish.
