Info for The Golden Heart Protector
The Golden Heart Protector is an all-cover collection featuring collaborations with Norah Jones, James Bay, Madison Cunningham, Andrew Bird, Julian Lage and others. The seven-song set was recorded over the course of a weekend in Los Angeles with producer Ryan Lerman. They were joined by friends who happened to be in town or were visiting the studio.
“I made this record out in L.A. almost by accident,” Glaspy says. “My dear friend Ryan Lerman and I hung out for a weekend in Los Angeles at his studio and I just kept playing songs and wonderful people kept showing up to sing and play them with me. He was the dream producer for a project like this because he just let it all happen. James Bay just happened to be in town from London on the day we were tracking, Madison Cunningham had a day off, Alam Khan is a childhood friend of my husband’s and happened to be in L.A.. It really was the most organic and wonderful thing.
“I’m such a lover of a good song and to have the opportunity to sing and celebrate all these well written tunes with all of my dear friends is really enchanting. All of the songwriters that we cover are either friends or heroes of mine and it feels special to pay homage to the legends of our time.”
The track listing for The Golden Heart Protector features songs reinterpreted through Glaspy’s singular lens, including tracks from Wilco, Magnetic Fields, Lucinda Williams, Rufus Wainwright , Blake Mills, Credence Clearwater Revival and Nico. Each offering a fresh emotional texture while honoring the original’s spirit. Her cover of Wilco’s Jesus, Etc prompted Jeff Tweedy to exclaim: “Holy shit! That’s all I’ve ever wanted my whole life — somebody else to sing my songs in a way that allows me to hear them as something new. So beautiful. Made me cry quite a bit.”
Originally from the Northern California town of Red Bluff, Glaspy began writing songs at age 15 and quickly developed a style marked by raw sensitivity and razor-sharp insight. She began her solo career with the self-released Homeschool EP in July 2012. She released a 7” in early 2016 featuring You And I and Somebody to Anybody — songs that would later appear on her debut full-length Emotions and Math, a bold and bracing album that introduced her as a major new voice in indie rock.”

Margaret Glaspy
In an era of excess and endless distraction, the New York-based singer/songwriter Margaret Glaspy rejects the noise in favor of something far more essential. On the self-possessed title track for her new album I Am Both Glaspy offers an ardent refusal of any outside pressure to compromise her multidimensionality. That embrace of complexity runs throughout the album’s eleven tracks. In the making of I Am Both, Glaspy stepped away from social media and soon discovered a clarity of mind she hadn’t experienced in years, followed by a sustained burst of creative momentum. As she penned her lyrics in longhand and then polished them up on a typewriter, Glaspy assembled a selection of songs that span from fictional vignettes to unguarded self-revelation to empathetic observation of the troubled world around her. I Am Both emerged from three days of sessions at New York City’s Reservoir Studios, where Glaspy recorded live with drummer/percussionist Jay Bellerose (Bonnie Raitt, Robert Plant, Alison Krauss), keyboardist Patrick Warren (Tracy Chapman, Tom Waits, Bruce Springsteen), and bassist Ross Gallagher (Paula Cole, Grails). Produced by Joe Henry (the three-time Grammy-winning singer/songwriter/producer known for his work with luminaries like Aimee Mann and Joan Baez), I Am Both ultimately stands as a striking new statement from one of the modern music canon’s most formidable songwriters.
