Info for Opening

With his debut album "Opening", the highly gifted trumpeter Jakob Bänsch emerges as a promising talent in jazz. The album impresses with Bänsch"s incredible technique, intonation and compositional variety and already reminds the US journalist Bill Milkowski of the debut of Wynton Marsalis.

Bänsch comes from a family of professional musicians and began playing the trumpet at the age of eight. As a young student with Bastian Stein at the HMDK Stuttgart and a member of the Bundesjazzorchester, he has made a name for himself in the field of jazz music. He has been a member of the Bundesjazzorchester since 2020 and started jazz trumpet at the HfMT Cologne one year later. The musician is also part of the WDR Young Composers Fellowship program and the Gutenberg Jazz Collective. As part of the Elbphilharmonie Jazz Academy, he was selected as a scholarship recipient and presented his music in the Elbphilharmonie"s Great Hall. Bänsch has already collaborated with established musicians* such as Melissa Aldana and Theo Croker, as well as playing in the bands of Wolfgang Haffner, Emil Mangelsdorff and Nils Landgren. Since 2022 he has been leading his own quartet, which won 2nd place at the Munich Jazz Prize. On "Opening", the musician is supported by a quartet, and the close collaboration between him and pianist Niklas Roever stands out in particular. The album represents Bänsch"s first major musical statement and brings together almost everything he has learned over the past 20 years. It is an intimate examination of the artist as a musician and a human being. A particular highlight on the album is the chamber jazz composition "Yearning," in which he is accompanied on flugelhorn by cello, viola and voice. Here the artist shows himself as a creator of moving music, in which the trumpet as an instrument is placed in the service of the greater whole - the music. For "Opening" there will be a tour, which will start in mid-March and will lead 4 months across Germany.
