Info for António Pereira da Costa: Concerti Grossi

Very little is known about António Pereira da Costa (c. 1697–1770), though the exceptional quality of his only surviving compositions – 12 Concerti grossi – earns him pride of place. He held the post of Chapel Master of the Cathedral of Funchal, the highest musical position in the Portuguese island of Madeira. Pereira da Costa's Concerti are the only set of Concerti grossi of Portuguese provenance identified to date. They were largely inspired by Corelli’s, but frequently reveal an unmistakable “Iberian” flavour. These works embody the charm and freshness of a truly exquisite “tropical Baroque”. Ensemble Bonne Corde presents the first recording of these pieces, which are a milestone in Portuguese eighteenth century instrumental music.

Ensemble Bonne Corde
Diana Vinagre, direction

Bonne Corde
is an early music ensemble that dedicates itself primarily to the cello repertoire of the 18th century, regularly highlighting works of Portuguese composers. Founded by cellist Diana Vinagre, it brings together a group of musicians with a shared passion of rediscovering repertoire from a historically-informed perspective.

Following Diana’s doctoral research on the role of the cello as a solo obbligato instrument in vocal music - specifically Portuguese repertoire at the threshold of the 19th century - Ensemble Bonne Corde has directed its attention to the recovery of vocal works in which new textures are explored through the use of bass instruments. In this context, the group has presented the modern première of several 18th century composers.

Among the upcoming projects we highlight the recordings for the label Ramée of the complete Lamentations for the Holy Week by Joseph-Hector Fiocco, coming out in November 2022, and António Pereira da Costa’s Concerti grossi, with the support of the Ministry of Culture of Portugal and GDA Foundation, to be released in the Spring 2023.

Diana Vinagre
After completing her studies at the National Academy of Orchestra in Lisbon, in the class of Paulo Gaio Lima, her passion for the historically informed interpretation takes Diana to the Royal Conservatory of The Hague in the Netherlands. In the class of Jaap ter Linden Diana obtains both Bachelor and Master degrees in Historical Interpretation Practice with distinction, having received the Top Talent Scholarship, attributed by the Conservatories of The Hague and Amsterdam. She was a member of the European Union Baroque Orchestra and integrated the Jerwood Project with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment.

Diana has an intense activity with several of the most renowned early music groups such as the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra, Cappella Mediterranea, L'Arpegiatta, Les Arts Florissants, Orchestra of the 18th century, Le Cercle de l'Harmonie, B'Rock, Ludovice Ensemble, Holland Baroque, Al Ayre Español and Divino Sospiro, working under the direction of musicians such as René Jacobs, Bartold Kuijken Leonardo Garcia Alarcon, Ton Koopman, Enrico Onofri, Laurence Cummings, Christina Pluhar, Frans Bruggen, and Lars Ulrik Mortensen. She regularly performs in the most important concert halls in Europe, both in orchestral and chamber settings, including the Concertgebow in Amsterdam, Opera Garnier and Opera Bastille in Paris, La Scala in Milan, Barbican Center, Palau de la Musica in Barcelona, Philarmonie de Paris and Barbican Center and Royal Albert Hall in London as well as at major ancient music festivals such as Utrecht, Aix-en-Provence, Ambronay and Brugges. Throughout her years of activity, Diana has participated in several recordings for different radio stations, such as Antena 2, Klara, BBC and France Musique, and specialized television channels such as Mezzo, Arte and Culturebox, as well as record labels as Alpha, Ricercare, Sony and Winter & Winter.

In 2009 she founded Ensemble Bonne Corde specialized in18th century cello repertoire, both instrumental and vocal, working actively in the recovery of an unknown repertoire of the baroque and classical periods. In this context, the work of research and execution of Portuguese sacred repertoire of the second half of the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries stands out, as this was the central subject of Diana’s doctoral research at the Universidade Nova de Lisboa (INET-Md) under the guidance of Professor Rui Vieira Nery. In 2021 he founded, together with double bassist Marta Vicente, the Lisbon based baroque orchestra Real Câmara which, under the direction of the Italian conductor and violinist Enrico Onofri, is dedicated to the recovery of Portuguese musical heritage.
