Info for Capricci: Castaldi & Pellegrini

The works of the theorbist Bellerofonte Castaldi and the guitarist Domenico Pellegrini are little known but nonetheless remain fascinating to their performers today, as they not only give clear proof of fertile musical imagination but also raise many questions about how they should be performed. Although Castaldi was the first to praise the innovative style of his friend Monteverdi, his works are marked by a strong Renaissance spirit. Castaldi and Pellegrini chose not only the most classical forms (dances, courantes, galliards) but also the most archaic (branles, batailles, canzoni). Lutenist, theorbist and baroque guitarist Albane Imbs now presents her first solo album after having founded her own ensemble, Les Kapsber'girls and played in ensembles led by Jordi Savall, François Lazarevitch, Raphaël Pichon and Rolf Lislevand, the great Norwegian lutenist/theorbist who was her teacher. Here, Imbs and Lislevand perform Castaldi’s Capricci a due stromenti, the only example of music written for a duo of theorbo and tiorbino, this latter being a miniature theorbo conceived and played by Castaldi himself.

Albane Imbs, theorbo, tiorbino, guitar
Rolf Lislevand, theorbo

Albane Imbs
discovered the renaissance lute at the tender age of 6 and attended her first lute lessons with Pascale Boquet. In 2012, she was admitted to the CNSMD in Lyon in the class of Rolf Lislevand with whom she learns mastering several historical plucked instruments as theorbo, archlute and baroque guitar. She obtains her master degree of Early Music in 2017.

As soloist or continuist, Albane had the opportunity to perform within well-known ensembles such as Le Concert des Nations (Jordi Savall), Pygmalion (Raphaël Pichon), Kapsberger Ensemble (Rolf Lislevand), Les Musiciens de Saint Julien(François Lazarevich)), Il Gusto Barocco (Jörg Halubek) or with conductors such as Emmanuelle Haïm.

In 2015, Albane creates her own ensemble, Les Kapsber’girls.

Besides performing, pedagogy and music teaching set the core of her activity. Since 2012, Albane possesses a degree in pedagogy (DUMI) and works frequently in educational environments.

Rolf Lislevand
The Norwegian lutenist Rolf Lislevand studied in Oslo and later at the Schola Cantorum in Basel with Hopkinson Smith and Eugène Dombois. He has travelled across the USA and Europe as a soloist and accompanist, has a major contract with the French label Astrée for whom he has already complete an award-winning CD of the music of Kapsberger, the complete works for lute by Vivaldi and baroque guitar works by Sanz and Santa Cruz, and an international reputation as a teacher at summer schools. He was guest at the International Guitar Symposium in London and at the Barcelona Festival.
