Info for Atypical Airship
A total of ten original music tracks are included in "Atypical Airship”. They present ten otherworldly destinations, mixed with different memories and atmospheres. It is a blueprint of Jun Xiao's fantasies, dreams, experiences and emotions consolidated from four years of music creation. Build from his vast jazz knowledge, he shifted the focus away from traditional Jazz music. Instead, he pays more attention on nature and logic behind music composition. Through this album, he hopes to explore beyond the familiar musical system and framework, just like riding on an Atypical Airship. This album fills with years of thinking and experimentation. As a breakthrough in his identity as a jazz musician, Jun Xiao introduced vocals to his solo album for the first time, inviting Hua Dong, the vocalist of Re-TROS, and the highly influential singer Leah Dou to contribute their voices. The album also features two tracks contributed by American jazz pianist Aaron Parks. For the post-production of the album, Jun Xiao invited world-renowned sound mixer Daniel Schlett and mastering engineer Greg Calbi onboard, taking an unconventional jazz approach and adding a refreshing undertone. Four years of self-discovery is a process of accumulation for Jun Xiao, and the birth of Atypical Airship is certainly a milestone for him. Jun Xiao no longer defines himself as a mere jazz guitarist, but a music producer who tries to pronounce his own story through the language of music.
"I had more time focusing on creating new music materials during the past few years and I had lots of ideas, which I wanted to present to the audience. I call the album 'airship' because I imagined that all my music ideas could be gathered together and stored in an airship. Because all my music ideas are very personal, abstract and surreal, I call them 'atypical'," says Xiao, who lives in Shanghai.
