Info for Don't Panic
While it may seem like a distant memory, the world was forever changed during the COVID-19 pandemic. I always tell my students that art doesn't exist in a vacuum, and this Album is proof of concept. All of these tunes were composed in the early stages of the pandemic. They reflect my personal lived experience, which was a dichotomy of inactivity coupled with uncertain dread. Many of us turned to "living" our lives on the internet, which had a multitude of unforescen consequences. Still, humanity persevered. I hope this music will remind us that we are able to simultaneously experience great joy and sorrow, and can find a way to grow from every experience.
This Album is dedicated to my friend and musical companion TJ Shank, who left an enduring legacy of excellence through his teaching and performance. I love you and miss you TJ, and look forward to our jam session when we meet again.
Thank you to Bill, Joe, and Trevor for your transcendent playing on this Album. Jazz is a social music, and these tunes would not have come alive without your help.
Thank you (as always!) to Christina and Patrick for your unyielding support of my musical vision, not to mention a superb recording! Finally, thank you the listener for joining us on this journey. Enjoy the music!
Michael T. Geib
Described as a “masterful” and “impressive” artist, double bassist Michael T. Geib defies musical boundaries. A true musical chameleon, he thrives in every artistic context and aspires to set a new standard of double bass playing in the twenty-first century. He has performed with countless notable artists, including but not limited to Benny Golson, Parry Karp, Linda Purl, Valerie Narjano, Jorja Fleezanis, Jamison Ross, Corrine Stillwell, Jodi Benson, 2CELLOS, David Benoit, Stefan Grasse, Kenny Garrett, Il Divo, Dave Douglas, Sharel Cassity, and Tess Remy-Schumacher. An in-demand recording artist with hundreds of credits to his name, he has performed on a multitude of projects for the Equilibrium, Naxos, Onyx Lane, Quam Audio, Sensory Overload, and Xolo Labels.
While he has performed extensively throughout Europe, North America, and the United Kingdom, he is privileged to call Oklahoma City his home. He maintains an active OKC performance career with the Lyric Theatre of Oklahoma, the Brisch Center for Historical Performance, the Painted Sky Opera, and the UCO Jazz Lab. He is a proud member of the American Federation of Musicians Chapter 375-703, the International Society of Bassists, and the Oklahoma Chapter of the American String Teachers Association.
A steward for posterity, Michael T. Geib teaches privately through the University of Central Oklahoma and Geib Musik. He is committed to teaching bassists to be versed in all types of music, with his doctoral treatise focusing on teaching improvisation to orchestral double bass players. His principal teachers were Melanie Punter, Rodney Jordan, Ian Bracchitta, and Delbert Felix.
Michael T. Geib is honored to represent the Onyx Lane and KRUTZ Strings catalog of artists, as well as the Recording Academy as a Grammy Voter.
