Info for Stravinsky: Dumbarton Oaks, Concerto in D & Danses concertantes (Remastered)

One of the final recordings by Sir Neville Marriner yet to be made available digitally, highlighting the sparkling chamber concerto for 15 instruments “Dumbarton Oaks”. Written in homage to Bach’s Brandenburg Concertos, it blends Baroque contrapuntal textures with Stravinsky’s rhythmic vitality and modern harmonic language.

The Violin Concerto in D has four movements. Their titles clearly refer to the music of the Baroque period, which inspired the piece in terms of form, rhythm, and instrumentation. A powerful, rhythmic "Toccata" opens, characterized by harsh repeated notes and the typically Baroque anapest rhythms. Aria I and II follow as internal movements. Stravinsky was clearly thinking of Bach's pensive, expressive examples of this type, such as the "Air" from the Third Orchestral Suite or the "Aria" from the "Goldberg Variations." The first aria in D minor is reminiscent of the Thomaskantor's second cello suite, while the second aria in D major is reminiscent of his richly ornamented Allemandes. The concluding "Capriccio" is truly capricious: a firework display of runs and Baroque-style dance rhythms. Here, the soloist finally has the space to develop brilliantly – and proves Milstein's dire predictions about the concerto's lack of impact to be false.

“Dumbarton Oaks” was the last piece Stravinsky wrote before emigrating to the United States. It was commissioned by Mr. and Mrs. Robert Woods Bliss in celebration of their 30th wedding anniversary. Mr. Bliss was an influential diplomat, and the couple were among Washington D.C.’s most prominent arts patrons. They hosted soirées at Dumbarton Oaks, their estate in the city’s Georgetown neighborhood. In 1944, the same location became the site of a conference that led to the founding of the United Nations. It is believed that Stravinsky drew inspiration for the Concerto’s form from the layout of the gardens at Dumbarton Oaks, which captivated him during a visit.
