Info for That Spell
Andrea von Kampen’s "That Spell" is an emotionally evocative powerhouse. It’s cinematic and sweeping- with literary references, reflections on nature and above all the ability to transport you to a memory, a place in time or somewhere you saw in a dream with vivid lucidity. Like a film director, she works as an aural auteur building scenes with her rapturous voice and the plaintive plucks of her guitar strings.
"That Spell" began in the late winter of 2020 as I wrote songs about my life, childhood, and issues around me. As the world slowly shut down, I decided to write the rest of the record and take my time in the studio since there was nothing else I could do. Making this record was a joy and a great way to maintain sanity as my friends and family came together weekly to play music, chat about the collective stress we all felt, and eat a lot of pizza. I can’t wait for you all to hear this album!
The album announcement follows last month’s news of her signing to Fantasy Records and the release of two new songs that also appear on the album, “Take Back Thy Gift,” and “Of Him I Love Both Day and Night.” von Kampen has also shared a series of covers via YouTube that include favorites written by Fleet Foxes and most recently, Maggie Rogers. Andrea von Kampen’s singular voice is one of her most spectacular gifts, potent and clear and on full display with these covers. “She brings fresh energy to traditional folk elements with loads of quiet power,” said RIFF Magazine.
Fresh off two shows with the Punch Brothers, Andrea von Kampen and has announced a record release show in her hometown of Omaha, NE on August 14th at The Slowdown. Full tour dates will be announced soon.
Andrea von Kampen burst onto the national stage via NPR’s Tiny Desk contest – an opportunity for unsigned talent to win a spot on the famed music discovery series. Though she didn’t ultimately land the prize, she was named as one of the top ten entries, and in the process netted a whole new fanbase. Since then, she’s released EP’s, singles, a self-released debut LP and found great success with film and television placements due to her intimate and cinematic music.
The Nebraska-raised singer-songwriter is a formidable talent with her deeply felt folk-indebted sound and inquisitive, empathetic lyrics. Andrea excels at connecting the dots between personal experience and the world at large. Her journey so far has been a life immersed by music. The youngest of four children raised in a musical family, Andrea and her siblings all learned instruments as she started playing guitar at a young age. “Music was just what we did,” she remembers, and on That Spell, she continues the familial collaboration by bringing in her brother David to work on string arrangements and the album’s stunning production. Inspired by nature and often employing deep literary references in her work, von Kampen’s music is emotional and reflective. Entering That Spell is a walk in the woods during magic hour – a dream conjured by a supremely gifted singer-songwriter, one of the year’s most exciting new arrivals.
Andrea von Kampen, vocals
Andrea von Kampen
is a folk singer-songwriter based in Lincoln, Nebraska, whose effortless vocal delivery has been praised by Hear Nebraska as “soulful and worn-in.” With the successful release of two EP’s, Another Day (2015) and Desdemona (2016), a Christmas EP (2016), an Audiotree Live album (2017), and her debut full-length album Old Country (2019), Andrea has quickly established herself in the recording studio and on the road. She has shared the stage with artists such as Tall Heights, Ira Wolf, Dead Man Winter, The Brother Brothers, Dead Horses, Darling West and many more.
Old Country, Andrea von Kampen’s debut full-length album, was released on February 8th, 2019. The album was recorded and mastered in Nebraska and features exclusively Nebraska-based musicians. Inspiration for Andrea’s songs often come from literature, art, and nature; in particular the literature and nature of Nebraska and the Midwest. The title track, Old Country, is based on the book “My Ántonia” by Nebraska author Willa Cather. Her single, Portland, received notable attention including features on The Bluegrass Situation, Spotify, Apple Music, and Amazon Music. Additionally, Amazon Music Canada featured Portland in their ‘Top Songs of 2018’ playlist. In a review of Portland, Ear To The Ground Music said, “It’s not so much about where you’re going, but that you want to get away. That emotion of “idealistic escapism” is one that listeners can all connect with, whether or not we want to go to Oregon or somewhere else. The inflection in von Kampen’s vocal has the conviction of a gospel track and the sincerity of a Dylan folk ballad.”
Andrea von Kampen first appeared in the public eye with her submission of Let Me Down Easy into the 2016 Tiny Desk Contest. Within 24 hours of submission, NPR Music, All Songs Considered tweeted her video as the featured artist of the day, saying “we were completely blown away.” Ultimately, Andrea finished the competition as a top ten finalist, which lead to increased popularity of her EP, Another Day, specifically her song Trainsong. Since then, her EPs have amassed millions of streams on Spotify and continue to grow.
