Info for Fauré & Poulenc: Works for Piano & Orchestra

Gabriel Fauré and Francis Poulenc: the works for piano and orchestra by these two French composers present fruitful contrasts. Fauré's ‘Ballade’ in F sharp major is graceful and cheerful, but ends with a Liszt-like climax, while his neglected ‘Fantaisie’ is unmistakable and full of character, although it makes do with only a modest orchestration. Poulenc, himself a gifted pianist, wrote his Piano Concerto for the Boston Symphony Orchestra during his second American tour in 1949, full of seductive melodies and beguiling orchestral colours. The ballet ‘Aubade’ was composed for piano and 18 instruments with a scenario by Poulenc himself. The work foreshadows the concerto and at the same time reveals the influence of Stravinsky.
