Info for Across the Open Spaces

In ACROSS THE OPEN SPACES, vocal ensemble KHORIKOS traces a path from isolation to belonging, from intimacy to loneliness, and from dark to light — all of which can be both crushing and ecstatic. With their ethereal blend and agile, dynamic singing, KHORIKOS performs pieces written largely for and by the group, from reimagined medieval chant to heartfelt settings of contemporary poetry. By standing in a circle and recording in 360°, KHORIKOS has captured the intimate and powerful experience of being surrounded by sound, allowing listeners to follow voices as they bend and move, and to inhabit an otherworldly sonic space.

KHORIKOS

KHORIKOS
is one of NYC’s most distinguished vocal ensembles. We curate, commission, and perform music from today’s most dynamic choral composers, alongside invigorating interpretations of music from the Medieval and Renaissance eras. We unearth and share heartfelt, anomalous, and underperformed works with passion and purpose.

Our concert projects engage deeply with poetry and physical space, inviting listeners into a musical, spiritual, and intellectual experience with every concert. We build lasting collaborative relationships with composers, bringing focused, powerful voices to our audiences. We strive to make music at an unprecedented level of artistry and focus.

We have shared our unique repertoire in appearances at the Sound Scene festival at the Smithsonian Hirshhorn, the Gotham Early Music Series, the Boston Early Music Festival, choral festivals in Serbia and Montenegro, NYC’s National Sawdust, (le) Poisson Rouge, and Alice Tully Hall, and in the group’s two latest international new music competitions, each drawing over 600 submissions from composers worldwide. Our programming has been supported by the Brooklyn Arts Fund, the Aaron Copland Fund for Music, the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, and the U.S. State Department. In collaboration with audio engineer Dan Dzula, KHORIKOS championed immersive digital media in the choral arts with “Kile Smith’s Vespers 360” and “Tavener 360,” the ensemble’s pioneering spatial audio projects.

KHORIKOS offers a fresh take on an age-old art form.
