Info for Suite Espontánea

The album ‘Suite Espontánea’ was released in May 2019 and explores the Jazz language through 9 original compositions, 2 of them as free improvisations, exploring and investigating form and improvisation, through different formats and musical situations, with a quintet formed by Alejandro Sánchez on tenor sax, Jasper Huysentruyt on keyboards, Milton Russell on double bass, Juan Pablo Jaramillo on drums and Felipe Peña on guitar and composition.

"A notorious change of creative direction is exhibited here by guitarist Felipe Peña with respect to the experimental and chamber-like work he had shown in Transfiguración (2018), with jazz quintet, string quartet and rapper. Now he focuses his entire composition on a concatenated story through a sequence of parts written for another jazz quintet. And when you say another, it is indeed ‘another’ ensemble, as he has completely revamped the elements, which he describes as chemical elements: Alejandro Sánchez (tenor sax), Jasper Huysentruyt (pianos), Milton Russell (double bass) and Juan Pablo Jaramillo (drums). Also inspired by jazz suites such as Sonny Rollins' Freedom suite (1958) and John Coltrane's A love supreme (1964), Felipe Peña rehearses his own narration of the story of a day in the life of a person, which begins with “Despertar” and ends with “Esfera espiral”, existence subjected to a new order. The music features much of the tenor saxophone and piano in contrast to a programmed retreat of the guitar into the background. And the series reaches moments of intensity and then of reflection in accordance with the story of that day that passes by, shading the moments with the declared soul jazz groove of ‘Mago blanco’ and the hand in hand dialogue of tenor and bass of ‘Espejos’."
