Info for No Return No Karma
Five years after his critically acclaimed debut album, "Masovian Mantra," which won the Jazz Fryderyk Award, double bassist, composer, and producer Michał Barański returns with a new project – the album "No Return No Karma." Barański invited Tomasz Dąbrowski to record the album's title single. This heralds an album brimming with courage, artistic freedom, and openness to cultural dialogue, in which Michał Barański once again redefines the boundaries of contemporary jazz, opening a new chapter in his career.
Michał Barański says of the single "No Return No Karma": "About a year before recording this album, I contacted Tomasz Dąbrowski, and later, during the recording sessions, it turned out to be a musical hit. Tomasz delivered exactly what I had envisioned, adding yet another element to my multicultural musical cauldron. A beautiful sound and a different perspective on music. Perhaps a slightly more Scandinavian one? (Tomasz has lived in Malmö, Sweden, for years.) This track is the album's calling card and also a biography of my musical fascinations from early childhood. An improvised rubato introduction for trumpet and guitar transitions into a classicizing cello part performed by me, which I've been playing since I was six. The double bass solo ends with a 4:5 polyrhythm, which connects to a swing pulse inspired by Philly Joe Jones. After the theme, there's a collective improvised part, led by Tomasz Dąbrowski." Then, unexpectedly, a section inspired by Indian konnakol emerges, but with a hip-hop pulse. All these seemingly disparate areas merge seamlessly thanks to my wonderful quartet, with whom we've harmonized so well over the five years we've been playing together that my comments or intervention during the recording session were unnecessary. A music video directed by Jakub Kotynia was created for the title track. Music flows regardless of genres, divisions, and the multipolarity of the current world. This is what this video and the album's title are about – I hope you'll notice and hear all these nuances too. Enjoy!
The project is founded on the musicians who collaborate with Michał Barański on a daily basis: Shachar Elnatan (guitar, oud), Michał Tokaj (piano, synthesizers), and Łukasz Żyta (drums). This quartet forms the foundation of the sound of the album "No Return No Karma," creating a harmonious and inspiring musical laboratory with Barański.
Exceptional guests join this cohesive whole, bringing their own sensitivity and distinct musical perspectives. Aga Zaryan, Kuba Badach, and Michał Rudaś give the album a unique vocal character, Tomasz Dąbrowski brings a trumpet sound rooted in Scandinavian tradition, and Bodek Janke, a master of tabla and konnakol, opens up a space for trance-like, rhythmic explorations.
