"Timeless" is a brand-new 10-track compilation featuring rare and unreleased studio recordings from Princes legendary vault. This unprecedented album encompasses tracks spanning every phase of Princes illustrious career, from 1977 to 2016. The project has been meticulously mastered by Grammy-nominated engineer and producer Chris James, a former Prince engineer whose notable credits include HITnRUN Phase Two, Art Official Age, and Plectrumelectrum.

"Timeless" is a posthumous compilation album comprising nine studio recordings and one live recording, covering all decades of Prince’s career from the 1970s to the 2010s. The album’s announcement states that it includes tracks "spanning every phase of Prince’s illustrious career, from 1977 to 2016." The songs are sequenced chronologically by their known or attributed recording dates, from I Am You in the late 1970s to How Come You Don’t Call Me Anymore (Live) in 2016. Following Originals, this is the second compilation of previously unreleased Vault material to gather recordings made over several different years, rather than songs from sessions connected to a specific album project.

The announcement of this compilation came as a surprise, since a post by The Prince Estate on social media a few months earlier had teased an upcoming deluxe edition of Parade ("PARADE Deluxe Edition, It’s coming."). No further details of that project had been announced. Soon afterwards, the title Decades circulated online as a possible working title or code name for a project The Prince Estate was working on. This has not been confirmed by the Estate, and the official announcement, made on 4 June 2026, presented the album as Timeless.

"Timeless" is the first posthumous album project comprising previously unreleased material to have been initiated by The Prince Estate following the 2022 management changes, with L. Londell McMillan and Charles Spicer, Jr. at the helm. The previous album release to feature previously unreleased songs, Diamonds And Pearls Super Deluxe Edition, had been developed under the former administration, after Prince’s assets had first been supervised by the court-appointed Bremer Trust and later managed by Comerica. Initially expected in 2022 under the working title Diamonds & Love, that project was to comprise material spanning both the Diamonds And Pearls and eras. It was subsequently revised and reduced by half under McMillan and Spicer before eventually being released in 2023, focusing solely on the Diamonds And Pearls era.

The emergence of "Timeless" also followed the resolution of the long-running Netflix film project set up under the previous administration. The contract gave Netflix exclusive access to recordings, videos, films, photographs and other material from Prince’s Vault, limiting the Estate’s ability to schedule future releases of previously unreleased audio or video material while the production remained unresolved. By 2024, director Ezra Edelman had completed the nine-hour film The Book Of Prince, but its portrayal of Prince was contested by the Estate under its post-2022 management, which requested cuts and reshoots. With no agreement reached on a revised version, The Prince Estate and Netflix announced on 6 February 2025 that the film would not be released, and the Estate’s official social media accounts posted the message “The Vault Has Been Freed. #FREE”; McMillan separately described the outcome as meaning that “the vault is free.” Nearly sixteen months then elapsed before the announcement of Timeless on 4 June 2026, with its 10-track configuration unveiled during Celebration 2026.

Against that backdrop, 2024 and 2025 were the first two consecutive full calendar years since Prince’s death in which no album containing previously unreleased recordings was issued. The Deluxe Edition of Around The World In A Day, released to mark its 40th anniversary in 2025, contained no new material.
