This second volume of Mozart Masses pairs one of his most extraordinary sacred works, of extravagant dimensions, with another written on a genuinely miniature scale. The comparison is fascinating in technical terms, as is the clarity with which the listener can detect the hand of the same composer in both.

Though the ‘Great’ Mass in C minor, K. 427 is one of Mozart’s best known and grandest sacred works, it is in fact incomplete. It lacks the Agnus Dei, substantial sections of the Credo (after ‘Et incarnatus est’), and parts of the Sanctus and Benedictus. This has led more than one scholar to attempt a completion; that used in this recording was made by Franz Beyer (1922–2018) and published in 1989.
