Info for Heartsong
Gretta Ray's highly anticipated third album Heartsong arrives on 30 October.
There is a moment on Heartsong where the pop sheen parts to reveal something raw, human and devastating. We’ve watched the Australian singer-songwriter evolve from a teenage Triple J Unearthed prodigy into a master craftsman of widescreen pop, but nothing quite prepares you for the emotional architecture of her third studio album.
Born out of an intense period of reckoning, a sudden, serious heart disease diagnosis at 26, coupled with the collapse of a long-term relationship, Heartsong isn't just an album title; it’s a literal and figurative inventory of survival. Recorded alongside Matt Corby, the record strips back the polished maximalism of her previous work to let its folk-tinged indie-pop breathe.
The title track, co-written with Corby, is a staggering centrepoint, balancing fragile vulnerability with a soaring melodic release. Meanwhile, the lead single Swimming, Crying captures the physical and emotional weight of grief while remaining effortlessly infectious.

From a triple j Unearthed High win in 2016 and winning the Vanda and Young Global Songwriting Prize the same year, to touring arenas with the likes of Maisie Peters, Mumford & Sons and Gang of Youths; Gretta Ray just keeps getting better.
Following the success of her debut album ‘Begin To Look Around in 2021, and the incredible response to her viral cover of ‘Vienna’ by Billy Joel in 2022’, Gretta’s sophomore release ‘Positive Spin’ in 2023 cemented her as one of Australia’s strongest songwriters.
Bouncing between infectious pop hooks and softer, autobiographical moments, it is Gretta’s honest and open lyricism that leaves listeners wanting more. ‘Positive Spin’ is a pure pop project that comes
to you bathed in golden light, a hazy sunset of love and heartbreak, growth and understanding. The release saw Gretta nominated for Album Of The Year at the 2023 triple j J Awards, as well
as being shortlisted for the 2023 Australian Music Prize.
Gretta has built herself an impressively loyal and sizable fan base that have dedicated themselves to the world she has created. Her music is both an exercise in self exploration, and a familiar, sisterly conversation with those who take part in her journey so enthusiastically.
With a track record like Gretta’s, it is clear that there’s no stopping her on her undeniable trajectory to pop-stardom.
