Info for Good Morning World
Four years after releasing their last album, Pericopes+1 return with an inventive new concept album of futuristic reflections on the present: “Good Morning World”. The 2024 release celebrates ten years of touring for this acclaimed Italian sax/piano/drums project whose style would best be described as “crossover jazz” by the international press (Jazzthetik, Herald Tribune, Jazz’n’More, AAJ, Jazziz, RAI RadioTr), a «cleverly unorthodox trio” (Musica Jazz – Italy) who “demonstrate power and intention” (Downbeat – USA) plus grit and creativity that has earned recognition from both industry pros and fans.
Over the years this power-trio has performed hundred of concerts in UK, USA, China, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Austria, Slovenia, Croatia, Switzerland, Belgium, Czech Republic, Nederland, including stages as the Gateshead Int’l Jazz Festival (UK), JIM Fest (Beijing), Sunside Jazz Club (Paris), Unterfahrt (Munich), ShapeShifter Lab (NewYork) to name a few. Their debut have been introduced by prestigious words of eminent jazz masters Dave Liebman and Enrico Rava, later in 2021 Pericopes project was mentioned in the Italian jazz history book “La Storia del Jazz” (Ed.Hoepli) as one of the most important/unique new-generation productions of the last years. In 2023 the trio has been nominated by Musica Jazz magazine in the italian TopJazz chart as one of “best band of the year”.
“Good Morning World” outlines a return to Pericopes’ native melodicism, in which the essentiality of lyricism is intertwined with a prismatic compositional texture, giving a spatial sense of continuous rotation. This Jazz reflects the spirit of Italian creativity – solid in its traditional academic heritage but contaminated by thousands of cultures and sounds that have shaped the music of the present for more than a century – as well as references to dodecaphonic music, European and African-American jazz, post-rock sounds, prog, avantgarde, combined with melodies of popular and liturgical inspiration.
The concept of the album began to emerge naturally during rehearsals in Italy, Austria and Germany, throughout tours and artistic residencies in 2023. This new music investigates a humanity that is going through one of the most significant periods of social transition in modern history. Pericopes do this by evoking different themes intertwined in a narrative that includes contrast, reflection, denunciation, cry, prayer, through imaginary worlds and dialogues, between post-human characters that flow beyond the chronology of time. We are awakened by a «good morning» with the awareness of already finding ourselves in a new world, one in which Homo Deus (con)fused his dual role with the image of himself created, in a three-dimensional way. The present world becomes the protagonist of this Odyssey that is full of the charm of the original mystery, as well as the unknown motive of the spirit that animates existences (real and artificial) in their search for happiness, freedom, truth, faith.
“Good Morning World” opens a new era for the trio, finding its current lineup renewed and evolved over the years, with its home and roots in Italy where Emi (the original co-founder), Claud and Ruben live and collaborate with the national jazz scene. This album reconfirms the collaboration with the Norwegian label Losen Records and the production at the Artesuono studios in Udine (IT), home to numerous Italian productions for the prestigious ECM and CAM Records. The novelty of this album are two featured, award-winning guest artists: the violinist Anaïs Drago (appears in Cosmic Nirvana) and the double bass player Rosa Brunello (appears in Assange), who gave a timbral and emotional contribution to the narrative of the album. Finally, the careful research of pure acoustic sound that distinguishes the productions of Pericopes’ albums (the eighth in the discography), that are made possible thanks to the use of a Fazioli F278 mk3 piano, weighted by the use of vintage electronics (original 70s synths) and an unusual analog pedalboard designed specifically for the saxophone.

Pericopes
Pericopes is a jazz duo project that began in Italy in 2007 by pianist Alessandro Sgobbio and saxophonist Emiliano Vernizzi.
One would best describe their style as ‘New Jazz’, with roots in the European tradition, Afro-American music, and improvisation, and an affinity for melody and compositional structure.
Pericopes has already participated in many important jazz festivals in Europe – the Umbria Jazz Festival (Perugia, Italy), Parma Jazz Frontiere (Parma, Italy), Jazz Pas Grave and Unesco International Jazz Day (Paris, France), BurgJazz (Münster, Germany), presenting their acclaimed double-debut CD The Double Side.
In 2014 Pericopes released Frames (ParmaFrontiere Records), a live DVD shot in the suggestive Teatro Sociale Gualtieri (Italy) which positively impressed American jazz journalist Dave Sumner (Bird is the Worm, All About Jazz) : “Sublime duo set. Some gorgeous moments on this recording.”
In Paris, Pericopes began collaborating with New-York-based drummer Nick Wight, marking the inception of a “transatlantic” musical direction and performing more than 100 shows across the USA and Europe as « Pericopes +1 ».
Pericopes’s new album What What has been released under UNIT Records on January 2018.
