Info for The Future Is Now (Live)
Compiled and produced by Chick Corea before his passing last year, The Future Is Now is a new and previously unreleased live album featuring the classic Elektric Band line up.
Curated by Chick Corea before his passing in February 2021, this remarkable and previously unreleased collection of live recordings featuring the reunited classic Elektric Band was captured during tour stops from 2016 to 2018.
Produced by Corea with the original Elektric Band recording engineer Bernie Kirsh, co-produced by Dave Weckl, and mastered by Bernie Grundman. The Future Is Now (Live) serves as a fitting closing chapter and is a must-have for any fan of this dynamic and groundbreaking group.
Led by the 27-time Grammy winner and Jazz Master who has been recognized by the National Endowment for the Arts, the Elektric Band came into being during the mid '80s, leaving an immediate and enduring mark on the genre. Their electrifying performances and groundbreaking fusion of jazz elements resulted in a series of albums that raised the standard for contemporary jazz excellence.
The group featured a core lineup of exceptionally talented musicians: John Patitucci on bass, Dave Weckl on drums, Eric Marienthal on saxophone, and Frank Gambale on guitar. Together, they crafted a dynamic and electrifying sound that came to define jazz fusion. Each album showcased their collective musical prowess, seamlessly blending intricate compositions with captivating improvisations.
This is the definitive live Elektric Band record Chick put together for the world to hear -- featuring tracks spanning their decades-long discography and serving as a celebration, and a fitting closing chapter, to the band's incredible legacy.
If you aren’t familiar with the Elektric Band, I can’t think of a better starting point than right here. These tracks are extended, and yet are played so skillfully, the time flies, nothing drags. Exciting live performances of some of their best tracks, with that extra bite you get from live performance. You are treated to two hours of some incredible music and musicianship. Corea is a once in a generation musician, you owe it to yourself to hear this world class band in their element.
"Despite audience response and ambience onstage on a high throughout, it’s fair to say that two of the band’s funkier cuts provide the biggest buzz. Yet whereas Beneath The Mask burns from the off, dynamically propelled by slinky, slap-pop bass, soprano sax and more playful pitch-bent keys, the band’s explosive 18-minute finale Got A Match truly magnifies the tireless drive and dexterity of this knockout band. Carrying enough ammo to swing hard at breakneck speed, swerve into a sassy half-speed section for sax and axe and still pack in five equally-stretched solos from all, to say this set ends with a bang is an understatement. In all, The Future Is Now serves as a fine and fitting farewell to, perhaps, Corea’s most popular and musically compelling collective, the likes of which we’re unlikely to hear again." Chick Corea
has attained iconic status in music. The keyboardist, composer and bandleader is a DownBeat Hall of Famer and NEA Jazz Master, with an astounding 67 Grammy nominations – and 23 wins, in addition to a number of Latin Grammys. From straight-ahead to avant-garde, bebop to jazz-rock fusion, children’s songs to chamber and symphonic works, Chick has touched an astonishing number of musical bases in his career since playing with the genre-shattering bands of Miles Davis in the late ’60s and early ’70s.
Yet Chick has never been more productive than in the 21st century, whether playing acoustic piano or electric keyboards, leading multiple bands, performing solo or collaborating with a who’s who of music. Underscoring this, he has been named Artist of the Year five times this decade in the DownBeat Readers Poll. Born in 1941 in Massachusetts, Chick remains a tireless creative spirit, continually reinventing himself through his art. As The New York Times has said, he is “a luminary, ebullient and eternally youthful.”
