Info for Percy Hilder Miles: Chamber Music, Vol. 2

We continue our voyage of discovery with the music of this chamber music of the extraordinary English composer Percy Hilder Miles (1878-1922). His Piano Sonata of 1920 is a delightful melodic work in three movements, beautifully performed by Ian Tindale, who also plays the charmingly inventive Six Album Leaves of 1894, something of a tribute to Schumann. The Grand Solo for Viola marked ‘so difficult as to be absolutely impossible’. It turns out of course to be quite delightful and perfectly playable, in this performance with great style and sensitivity and with a smile on his face by violist Peter Mallinson. The final work, his Quintet for Clarinet and Strings in E flat is another real find and musically is a work of great stature, deserving to be played again and again, it is a remarkable and very fine addition to the Clarinet Quintet repertoire, played here by John Bradbury, Principal Clarinet with the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra and the Cirrus String Quartet (who recorded WH Reed’s String Quartets for MPR).

Cirrus String Quartet
The members of the Cirrus String Quartet are all leading solo and chamber music performers, and between them, they have worked with most of the top chamber orchestras in Great Britain.

Amongst our recordings are music for strings and wind by Mozart, string quintets by Mozart and Schubert, Tchaikovsky’s sextet ‘Souvenir de Florence’ and, most recently, the two quartets of Leoš Janáček.

In addition to its concert schedule, Cirrus has been recorded by BBC radio, appeared on ITV, and performed at the Wigmore Hall.

The past year has proved difficult for musicians everywhere, but we have continued to meet and rehearse whenever it was allowable and safe for us to do so. Our quartet is built not only on our love for the amazing music written for this combination but also on the sheer exhilaration we find in working together. Chamber music should be music shared among friends, and we cannot wait to share ours with you.

John Bradbury
is a leading British clarinettist. Born in 1967, he read Natural Sciences at St. John's College, Cambridge and went on to the Royal Academy of Music where he won the Hawkes Clarinet Prize and the Principal's Prize. In 1993, John joined the Chamber Orchestra of Europe and and two years later joined the London Symphony Orchestra, as second clarinet. In 1997 he was invited to his present post - Principal Clarinet with the BBC Philharmonic. Since then the orchestra has recorded over 120 CDs, made over 500 broadcasts, given 50 Proms and over 20 international tours. John has appeared as soloist with the orchestra many times, notably performing the Mozart Concerto under Gunther Herbig, and recording the Busoni Concertino under Neemi Jarvi. His Scherzetto by Malcolm Arnold was Editor's Choice in "The Gramophone".

Clare Bradbury studied violin at the Royal Academy of Music, London and an MA in Music Education at London Institute of Education. Clare worked for seven years as a primary school teacher and was a member of the Senior Management Team. She took a career break in 1999 to look after a young family. In 2000 she helped launch musicalchairs website and became administrator in 2001.
