Info for Musica Sacromontana XVIII: Václav Pichl, Józef Zeidler

Another publication documenting the concerts of the Musica Sacromontana festival held annually in the basilica at Swieta Góra near Gostyn.

The festival serves as a continuation of the intentions of the Order of the Philippine Friars, who wished to evangelise through the promotion of culture in its broadest sense. It was thanks to their efforts that an excellent band was founded there as early as in the 17th century, and that the most outstanding composers, led by Giovanni Pelestrina, came to Gostyn. Many of them wrote works commissioned by the congregation, and the fathers also filled the library with copies of works by the greatest masters. There was no shortage of outstanding composers among the Poles either - among them was Józef Zeidler, associated with the monastery, one of the most outstanding representatives of classicism in Polish music. His works were presented at all editions of the festival. During the 2022 festival, a performance of Zeidler's Litany of John of Nepomuk and Rorats took place. In addition to liturgical music, non-sacred works also resounded at the Holy Mountain (either in the church itself or in front of its façade). These were, as the chronicler writes, "simphonies, adagio or other exquisite and appropriate pieces". This type of repertoire is represented by the Sinfonia in C by the Czech composer Václav Pichl (1741-1805), the score of which has been preserved in the collection of the Svatá Hora library.
