She was one of the first female composers and one of the leading musical personalities of the 16th century: Vittoria Aleotti (ca. 1575-ca. 1646) and her madrigals are considered well-kept musical secrets. She grew up at the influential d'Este court in Ferrara as a musical prodigy who could play numerous instruments in a very short time and entered the San Vito convent at the age of 14, where she continued her musical education. She wrote her first madrigal at the age of 16 and later became the director of the convent near her hometown, composed until old age and was highly regarded as a harpsichordist, organist and conductor. She was admired by Duke Alfonso d'Este, Pope Clement VIII and Archduchess Margaret of Austria, among others.

Her madrigals, all of which are world premiere recordings, bear witness to Aleotti's innovative compositional style with polyphonic sophistication such as in ‘Hor che la vaga Aurora’ and emotional depth such as in ‘Baciai per haver vita’ and are brought to new life by the vocal ensemble Cantus Thuringia on this recording for the German harmonia mundi label.

The programme is complemented by works for keyboard instruments written in Vittoria Aleotti's circle - for example by Luzzasco Luzzasci (1545-1607) and Ercole Pasquini (ca. 1550-ca. 1619).

The vocal ensemble Cantus Thuringia is dedicated to the repertoire of the 16th to 18th centuries in various formations: From quartets to chamber choirs, the professional singers are able to produce an ensemble sound that matches the music. Under the musical direction of its founders Bernhard Klapprott and Christoph Dittmar, the ensemble performs at renowned international festivals and has produced numerous CD, radio and television recordings.

konzertiert als Vokalsolist und Ensemblesänger mit Ensembles wie La Capella Ducale / Musica Fiata, Bell ́Arte Salzburg, Les Amies de Philippe, dem Rosenmüller Ensemble, dem Kammerchor Stuttgart, dem Vocalconsort Berlin, Vokalensemble Rastatt, Chorus Musicus Köln sowie als Cembalist u.a. mit den Bamberger Synfonikern, Staatsphilharmonie Nürnberg, der Jenaer Philharmonie oder dem Rundfunk Sinfonieorchester Berlin.

Er arbeitete mit Ensembleleitern wie Roland Wilson, Bernhard Klapprott, Ludger Remy, Wolfgang Katschner, David Bates, Frieder Bernius, Holger Speck, Christoph Spering, Maurice van Lieshout und Manfred Cordes.

Er trat u.a. bei den Internationalen Händel-Festspielen Göttingen, dem mdr-Musiksommer, dem Bachfest Leipzig, den HallerBachtagen, Musica Sacra Masstricht, den Internationalen Händel-Festspielen Halle, den Tagen Alter Musik in Herne und dem Festival Oude Muziek Utrecht auf und wirkte bei Rundfunk- und CD-Produktionen sowie bei ZDF- und MDR-Fernsehproduktionen mit.

Seine Discographie als Ensembleleiter umfasst das Album "Time stands still" mit englischer Renaissance- und Barockmusik von Dowland und Purcell (2018, sony music / dhm) sowie Melchior Francks "Geistliche Gesäng und Melodeyen" (2020, sony music / dhm).

Seit 2013 hat er einen Lehrauftrag für Korrepetition, Cembalo und Generalbass / Aufführungspraxis an der Hochschule für Musik Franz Liszt Weimar.

Christoph Dittmar studierte Cembalo bei Bernhard Klapprott sowie Gesang bei Gundula Anders und Gudrun Bär.

Cantus Thuringia
Das Vokalensemble widmet sich in verschiedenen Besetzungen dem Repertoire des 16. bis 18. Jahrhunderts: Vom Quartett bis zum Kammerchor sind die professionellen Sängerinnen und Sänger in der Lage, der Musik entsprechend einen adäquaten Ensembleklang zu erzeugen. Die Zusammenarbeit mit international gefragten Solisten ergänzt dabei die musikalische Bandbreite.

Neben dem Schwerpunkt auf geistlicher Vokalmusik wird bei der Aufführung von Bühnenwerken durch die Zusammenarbeit mit Spezialisten historischer Schauspielkunst bzw. Gestik ein einheitliches Gesamtkonzept angestrebt. So konnte das Ensemble in Produktionen wie Purcells "Dido and Aeneas" (Regie: Margit Legler), Telemanns "Pimpinone" oder Anna Amalias "Erwin und Elmire" (beide Regie: Nils Niemann) auch mit Bühnenwerken international auf sich aufmerksam machen.

Das Ensemble gastiert bei internationalen Festivals u.a. den Händel-Festspiele Halle (Saale), Internationale Händel-Festspiele Göttingen, Bachfest Leipzig, dem Festival Oude Muziek Utrecht, der Bachbiennale Weimar, Tage Alter Musik in Herne, Gröpelinger Barock, den Thüringer Bachwochen, dem Heinrich-Schütz-Musikfest und realisierte zahlreiche CD-, Rundfunk- und Fernsehaufnahmen. Musikalisch geleitet wird das Ensemble durch seine Gründer Bernhard Klapprott und Christoph Dittmar.

Das Ensemble brachte zahlreiche wiederentdeckte Werke erstmalig zu Gehör: Weihnachts- und Neujahrsoratorium von Georg Gebel d.J., Matthäuspassion von Johann Christoph Rothe, die CD „Triumph, ihr Christen seid erfreut“ mit Kantaten von Georg Friedrich Händel und Friedrich Wilhelm Zachow, CD "Große Festkantaten" von C.Ph.E. Bach sowie sämtliche Kantaten Johann Peter Kellners alle bei cpo. 2018 erschien bei sony music / dhm das Album "Time stands still" mit Musik von Purcell, Locke und Dowland und 2019 die Ersteinspielung Reinhard Keisers "Oratorium passionale" erneut bei cpo. Melchior Franks "Geistliche Gesänge und Melodeyen" erscheint im Jan 2020 erneut bei sony music / dhm.
