Info for Ruiz-Pipó: Works with Guitar, Vol. 2
Antonio Ruiz-Pipó became an essentially Parisian artist, but his music always retained the historical roots and warmth of expression of his Spanish origins. Volume 1 of this edition (8.573971) focused on chamber music with guitar, and this programme presents four solo cycles. As with many of Ruiz-Pipó’s works, the Otoñales are dedicated to and inspired by figures amongst his own circle of friends and colleagues. The deeply expressive and vibrant Canciónes y danzas are a homage to Mompou, and representative of a composer steeped in the music of Albéniz and Falla but with a rigorous individuality that makes his voice unique, evocative and varied.
"Following their release of a music by the Spanish composer, Antonio Ruiz-Pipo, Naxos now issue a second disc that is devoted to works for the solo guitar.
Though musically educated in Spain, the young Ruiz-Pipo moved to Paris where he was to spend most of his life creating a career as a concert pianist and teacher, his output of compositions modest in quantity and scope. It included a sizeable number for solo guitar, though their Spanish influences were those of a visitor who was recalling all that he heard while soaking up the atmosphere. Mostly short character pieces gathered together to form suites, some, the Danza from the first of the Canciones y danzas, taking his name around the world, for seldom has music so vividly captured the vivacity of Spain. That he could compose very serious works outside of these Spanish influences comes in the three Preludios from 1976, his harmonic language becoming very forward thinking, and that continues through the Preludios a Obara, seven pieces composed for the Japanese guitarist, Yasumasa Obara. The disc certainly ‘throws down the gauntlet’ in challenging the performer’s dexterity. That is here taken up by the German guitarist, Wolfgang Weigel, who, now in his sixties remains one of the world’s most famous solo performers. His interest in Spanish music took him into contact with Ruiz-Pipo, and in 1992 they began a ‘critical’ edition of his solo guitar works. Sadly he was to die before it was completed, this very well recorded benchmark release becoming a tribute to Weigel’s friend." (David’s Review Corner)
Wolfgang Weigel, guitar
Wolfgang Weigel
Since more than 4 decades Wolfgang Weigel is in charge of the classical guitar. His diverse activities made him a representative of his discipline with high international acclaim.
WW´s dedication to his instrument grew in early childhood. The event of a recital by Andrés Segovia in 1968 finally became defining for his decision to become a professional guitarist. After accomplishing his studies at the music academies in Saarbrücken and Lübeck in 1974 he dedicated himself to teaching and to the perfection of his own artistic shape.
In 1983 Weigel became lecturer at the music academy in Münster where during the following twenty years he taught students from all over the world. Many of those today work themselves in music academies or act as concert guitarists. Weigel´s masterclasses lead him to the most important academies in Europe and America.
Today Weigel teaches at his Guitar academy in Münster /Westphalia(Germany).
WW has been invited to the juries of important competitions like the „Certamen Francisco Tárrega“ Benicásim, „Francisco Guerrero“ Madrid, „Alhambra“, Valencia (Spanien), „Dr. Luis Zigall“, Viña del Mar (Chile), „Guitar Foundation of America“ (USA).
As a performer Weigel has a universal repertoire including all epochs and styles which are connected with the classical guitar. Particularly his interpretations of contemporary music are highly estimated. Some of them are documented by his recordings. (* discography) Within his programs he presented numerous premieres.
His friendship with composers like Antonio Ruiz Pipó, John W. Duarte, Vaclav Kucera, Sidney Corbett, Máximo D. Pujol, emblematic figures of the contemporary guitar, his information about their artistic intention made him an authentic witness, who has first-hand knowledge about personal and artistic details at his disposal. Evident signs of his connections are numerous compositions, dedicated to him, amongst them concertos for guitar and orchestra and chambermusic. (# dedications).
Besides his role in the contemporary music field his also considered an expert of the music of Johann S. Bach.
His expertise is based not least upon his studies with the legendary guitar prophet Karl Scheit, who was an eminent mentor for him. Also with Bach specialists like the great composers Frank-Michael Beyer und Ruth Zechlin.
His insights WW disposes again and again within his concert programs and masterclasses.
In 2009 he founded the GITARRENLAND festival at the border region between Germany and France. Every year he calls the crême of the international guitar- and music scenery to perform at picturesque locations. Constantly increasing number of visitors and their enthusiasm witness the common interest in unusual programs and the infinite diversity of the guitar cultures.
Weigel´s engagement as a performer, teacher and promoter of the guitar art made him a unique ambassador of his instrument and represent his passion for the arts.
