Info for Idole

Peter Kraus takes a bow to his earliest inspirations and celebrates timeless swing: On the new album "IDOLE" he interprets milestones by Sammy Davis Jr, Nat King Cole, Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald & Co. among others. Shortly after his 83rd birthday, Peter Kraus dedicates a very special album to his earliest sources of inspiration - and relies on soulful swing and jazz arrangements that he recorded together with Götz Alsmann, Helge Schneider, Till Brönner, Annett Louisan and Joscho Stephan. The new album "IDOLE" is released by energie KULTUR. These melodies have accompanied him all his life: Inspired by early idols between operettas, swing jazz and the Rat Pack, Peter Kraus has had an exceptional career - which recently culminated in the 65th stage anniversary for the German rock & roll trailblazer. On his new album "IDOLE" he takes a bow to the great swing and jazz influences of his childhood and youth by reinterpreting their classics together with top-class guests and presenting them in German. "IDOLE" is dedicated to his father, Roy Orbison, Sammy Davis Jr., Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Django Reinhardt, Nina Simone and Louis Armstrong, among others... Many of the titles collected on "IDOLE" were actually already playing in Peter Kraus' parents' house - at a time when rock & roll had not even been invented yet: his father, for example, familiarised him with various jazz standards, with the work of Sammy Davis Jr. and Nat King Cole or with the unforgotten compositions of Franz Lehár. By avoiding the work of his rock & roll heroes this time - for once no Presley, no Chuck Berry, no Buddy Holly either - the eternally young at heart has used the last few months to travel even further back into the past in his own home studio. He is supported by Helge Schneider (piano, electric piano, saxophone), Götz Alsmann (piano) and Till Brönner (flugelhorn). Jazz guitarist Joscho Stephan also contributes his magic.

The bow to the greats of the swing era was produced and arranged by the guitarist of his live band, André Tolba, and by Stephan Baader. As a producer and songwriter duo, the two have already been responsible for a number of hits by Sasha, Boppin B., Dick Brave and the Backbeats, Uwe Ochsenknecht, Thomas Gottschalk & Co. which brought them platinum and gold as well as an Echo and other awards. The musical picture is completed by Kraus' long-standing backing band: Bolle Diekmann on bass, Guido Hendrichs on piano and Guido Jöris on drums. For an exclusive duet, Kraus also brings the exceptional German singer Annett Louisan to his side - right at the beginning of the album: for "Blue Bayou", originally by Roy Orbison, the two share the microphone. "With you, I learned to see every new day like a gift," the lyrics say, while the incredibly light, quite minimalist arrangement carries the unmistakable voices of the two wonderfully with very few elements and a touch of exoticism. Like a sunny late afternoon, "Niemand liebt dich so wie ich" (No one loves you like I do) ripples along - a song from Franz Lehár's operetta "Paganini" (1925), which his father, Fred Kraus, once laid in the young Peter's cradle. Götz Alsmann also gets to shine here on the piano - a long overdue collaboration that Kraus had been dreaming of for a long time. With a lot of swing and a whistle on his lips, he then sketches "Mr. Bojangles", which he knows from an early encounter with Sammy Davis Jr. Originally a country song, this light, very unagitated and rather quiet joie de vivre also comes to the fore here, which runs like a red thread through the album "IDOLE". The Rat Pack classic "Fly Me To The Moon" (here: "Schieß mich doch zum Mond", the lyrics by Frank Ramond) and the bossa nova hit "Manhã de Carnaval" ("Happiness came to me as in a dream") are also among the early and now lifelong soundtrack milestones for Peter Kraus - whereby Till Brönner's flugelhorn is allowed to dance around the wordless songs of happiness. "... but may I trust you, you, you with a light heart?", it says in the 200-year-old traditional "Du, du liegst mir im Herzen", which was already sung by "die Dietrich" - and which comes along again with this snapping, while Helge Schneider assists on the vibraphone. It continues with an absolute love song classic (Nat King Cole's "L.O.V.E.", here as "L.I.E.B.E.") and the breathtaking guitar figures of album guest Joscho Stephan, who playfully counters the touch of melancholy (Django Reinhardt's "Bei dir war es immer so schön").

In the last third, Helge Schneider joins in again ("Manchmal" - in the original "Rhythm Of The Falling Rain", dedicated to the great Nina Simone), and Paul Kuhn's recommendation "Kauf dir einen bunten Luftballon" (Buy a colourful balloon) recalls a time when you could still read customer feedback in a satisfied face. In the middle of the night, Peter Kraus then toasts to love, takes another "on the way" ("Noch einen Drink auf die Liebe", Sinatra) and then bows to Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald, who made "Sommerzeit" ("Summertime") from "Porgy & Bess" his life soundtrack. A self-iconic waltz hit from his own back catalogue acts as the closing act: "Schwarze Rose, Rosemarie" - a good 60 years later, this beautiful swing version of his greatest hit is a bonus thank-you and a bow to his fans who have remained loyal to him for so many years... If a life without sleep were possible, Peter Kraus would certainly have chosen it: "... after all, sleeping keeps you up so much," was his comment. But even if he had to sleep occasionally, Peter Kraus has achieved everything that can be achieved in music/film/show & co. in the last 65 years as a full-blooded entertainer: over 100 singles, around 20 studio albums, more than six dozen compilation albums - and over 17 million records sold speak for themselves. From the early megahits ("Sugar Baby", "Schwarze Rose, Rosemarie") to the "Zeitensprung" album and the latest live highlights: This man, who was already able to take off as a 14-year-old with the "Flying Classroom", who a little later advanced to become the "German-speaking Elvis", still knows how to thrill people a good half century later: be it as a "skunk" ("The Masked Singer") - or, as now, as a soulful swing singer who, together with top-class guests, reflects on his roots.

Peter Kraus
