Info for Chicago Moves
Gaudete Brass makes its Cedille Records debut with Chicago Moves, an album of new and diverse American works for brass quintet. All were composed in the last six years, and all but one were written expressly for the Chicago-based ensemble of young brass virtuosos and receive their world-premiere recordings on the new album.
World premieres include the title work, David Sampson's Chicago Moves (2011), a tribute to the city's multifaceted character through 'third stream' classical-meets-jazz melodies atop an almost minimalist groove. Rob Deemer's Brass (2012) explores the rich and varied textures and sounds unique to the brass family of instruments. Brian Baxter's A Great Commercial City, another valentine to Gaudete Brass's hometown, draws its melodic and harmonic content from a mid-19th century folk song praising the fertile farmlands of Illinois. Stacy Garrop's Helios (2011) depicts the classical Greek sun god's blazing journey across the daytime sky and calm, nightly slumber in his golden boat. John Cheetham's Sonata for Brass Quintet (2008), written in the classical sonata form of fast-slow-fast movements, includes solos for each instrument. James Woodward's Gaudete (2007), the quintet's very first commission, conveys the jubilant spirit inherent in the ensemble's name, which comes from the Latin word for 'rejoice.'
Chicago Moves also includes celebrated composer Joan Tower's Copperwave (2006), a work in which musical ideas move in waves, sometimes to a Latin American-style rhythm.
'Throughout, the Gaudete Brass impresses with precise attacks, spot-on intonation, and the kind of unstrained virtuosity that bespeaks an easy working relationship.' (Ronald E. Grames, Fanfare)

Gaudete Brass
Founded in Chicago in 2004, Gaudete Brass (pronounced gow-DAY-tay) focuses primarily on new music. The ensemble’s other passion is performing Renaissance music in a historically informed manner on modern instruments, using their own editions of the works.
Quintet members are Bill Baxtresser and Ryan Berndt, trumpets; Julia Filson, horn; Paul Von Hoff, trombone; and Scott Tegge, tuba. Von Hoff and Tegge are founding members.
Gaudete’s fans include the Juilliard School’s venerable American Brass Quintet, whom Guadete Brass considers mentors and models. The ABQ’s Raymond Mase calls Gaudete “an outstanding young group bringing fresh ideas to brass chamber music. I'm really excited to see such a fine ensemble dedicated to serious brass repertoire."
The quintet’s discography includes its self-released debut album, Brass Outings, selected as an “Editors’ Choice” by independent Web music retailer CDBaby.com, and Conversations in Time, comprising music for brass quintet and organ, with organist R. Benjamin Dobey on the Pro Organo label.
Gaudete has appeared at colleges, universities, and conservatories around the country, including The Juilliard School, Eastman School of Music, Vanderbilt University, University of Chicago, University of Notre Dame, University of Missouri, University of Georgia, Arizona State University, and California Institute of the Arts, among others.
The quintet has performed in radio broadcasts from Chicago, Nashville, Milwaukee, and other cities. Its website is www.gaudetebrass.com.
