Info for FRAGMENTS II – Lili Boulanger

‘FRAGMENTS’ is music of the past and present rolled into one: some of the most innovative musicians on the international electronic music scene interpret and adapt classical works. Following the first edition of ‘FRAGMENTS’ with new interpretations by French composer ERIK SATIE (2022), ‘FRAGMENTS II’ will now follow on 20 September 2024 with works by French composer LILI BOULANGER. ‘FRAGMENTS II’ with 14 remixes and reworks will be released via Deutsche Grammophon. A contemporary echo, a musical rediscovery and expansion of LILI BOULANGER's very own and personal sound world.

What happens when some of the most creative artists on the international electronic music scene reinterpret classical works? With this question in mind, Deutsche Grammophon launched the FRAGMENTS project in 2022 and invited contemporary artists to rework the works of French composer Erik Satie. The result was a dynamic dialogue between past and present, tradition and innovation, creation and re-creation - a contemporary showcase of works.

FRAGMENTS is now entering its second round. This time, the focus is on the French composer Lili Boulanger (1893-1918), one of the greatest musical talents of her time. The multi-instrumentalist was the first woman to be awarded the Prix de Rome and a scholarship, which was a sensation at the time! ‘Her immense talent enabled her to fight for a place for herself with courage and authority in a sphere that was still very male at the time,’ writes the renowned Boulanger expert Alexandra Laederich from the Centre international Nadia et Lili Boulanger. Lili Boulanger wrote music that oscillated between the traditional and the avant-garde. However, Lili Boulanger was never able to hear her most important works, which were strongly characterised by social, societal and artistic themes, as well as by her life, performed. After a long illness, the virtuoso composer was already dying at the age of 24 when she dictated these works to her sister Nadia.

13 contemporary musicians and artist duos such as Pølaroit, Joplyn, Anja Schneider, Niklas Paschburg, Fejká, Ann Clue (all from Germany), ), il:lo (Germany/France), Gryr (Sweden), Angara (France), Rodriguez Jr.,(France/USA), Marta Cascales Alimbau (Spain), Keni Sakuda (UK) and Snorri Hallgrimsson (Iceland) have reworked Lili's works for FragmentsII. The result is a highly modern and multi-faceted album.

Lili Boulanger (1893-1918) was one of the greatest musical talents of her time. She grew up in Paris in an environment in which her extraordinary talent could fully develop. Her grandmother was a singer at the Opéra-Comique, her father a composer and teacher at the Paris Conservatoire. Her older sister, who played a central role in her life, was the famous Nadia Boulanger. Shaped by external influences, she developed a musical language that played with the alternation between tradition and avant-garde. Her orchestral works, in the spirit of contemporaries such as Igor Stravinsky, had a special tonal power.
