Info for As Dreams
For the Franco-Swiss philosopher and forerunner of Romanticism Jean-Jacques Rousseau, song was the original first language, and it should therefore be the aim of future composers and singers to guide men back to their true nature and origin. Today this idea strikes us as antiquated and odd: music is not nature but an art form, and the new music has become an exploration of possibilities, a glimpse of different futures and of landscapes we have yet to visit. This applies to all of the works on this disc: they are forward-looking and full of promise, they are permeated not only with their own era, but with times that we can imagine lie in front of us.
At the same time there is something old and archaic about them, something that points back to a distant past – if not to a faraway natural state, then to the fundamental elements of the world and existence: light and darkness, order and chaos, community and loneliness, dream and death. And not least, it is music that deals with how life loses itself in obscurity, in night and parting. It opens up spaces in which the past seems to unfold in our own time.
