Info for Die Fremde

The debut album "Die Fremde" from Hannah Koob. Koob is a young Dutch-German top saxophonist who dedicates herself with immense energy to play unexplored repertoire for saxophone.

Die Fremde is a musical expedition along music that has a gloomy but evermore cheerful timbre. Virtuoso solo playing in the rarely performed The Stranger by the Dutchman Hans Kox, this is only the 2nd studio recording of the piece, in which Koob shows the extreme limits of the melodic and dynamic range of her alto saxophone. Lyricism and fluent interplay between piano and saxophone in the Partita by Erwin Dressel and compelling harmonies and ditto melody in Henk Badings’ La Malinconia.

Two commissioned compositions complete this energetic and infectious debut: the cinematic Andante by Leonard Küßner and Halvdager by Andreas van Zoelen, the latter in the beautiful, rarely heard combination of saxophone and harmonium.

Hannah Koob, saxophone

Hannah Koob
German Saxophonist Hannah Koob was described as a musician with "a warm and singing sound even in the extreme registers, the ability to create long vocal passages, a flexible tone-colour and, a very accomplished technique".

Saxophone lessons for several years with Christine Rall (member of the Raschèr saxophone quartet) provided her a deeper knowledge about the classical saxophone played in the tradition of the saxophone pioneer Sigurd Raschèr. To gain detailed knowledge she attended many masterclasses in Europe.

In 2016, she moved to Tilburg, Netherlands, where she is studying at the Academy for Music and Performing Arts with Andreas van Zoelen.

For Hannah, one of the most important responsibilities for the future of the classical saxophone is playing new music. There are so many unexplored avenues for the instrument which is why she specialized in modern repertoire.

As important as playing new music is making chamber music for her. Hannah holds the chair for tenor saxophone in the BRON saxofoonkwartet since 2016 and plays regularly with symphony- and string orchestras.

As an orchestral musician Hannah was playing with, amongst others, Philharmonie Zuid-Nederland, SWR Symphonieorchester and the Staatskapelle Dresden.

As a soloist she has performed with orchestras like the Symfonieorkest Flevoland, Alkmaars Symfonieorkest, the Trajectum String Orchestra Utrecht and many more.

Hannah Koob was featured on national radio in the Netherlands and her past concerts have included performances at the World Saxophone congress in Zagreb, Croatia in 2018 and the Schostakowitsch Tage in Gohrisch in 2019.
