Info for as day breaks
Prolific Brooklyn-based multi-instrumentalist, composer and producer Jerk returns with ‘as day breaks’, the second part of their two-EP narrative cycle. Releasing Friday 15th May via DeepMatter Records, the project operates as the daylight counterpart to 2025’s ‘as night falls’. Where the first EP explored the darker, more introspective corners of human nature through late-night electro-jazz and nocturnal moods, ‘as day breaks’ turns towards warmth, clarity and presence.
Created once again alongside drummer and longtime collaborator Martine Wade, the EP unfolds as a journey through a single day, capturing moments of re-entry into the world, pauses for reflection, and the energy of life fully in motion. Across seven tracks, Jerk blends electroacoustic jazz, funk-leaning grooves and melodic minimalism, threaded with environmental detail and subtle narrative intent.
“Among this joint album project, this is the essence of Jerk. Neither day nor night, but something more ethereal, something out of a dreamstate.” (Jerk)
Following widespread support across previous releases from platforms including Stereofox and Somewhere Soul, alongside DJs such as Huey Morgan on BBC 6 Music, Tony Minvielle and John Osborne on Jazz FM, Papaoul and Tom Ravenscroft on Rinse FM, ‘as day breaks’ continues Jerk’s evolution away from the ‘beatmaker’ tag. Together, Jerk and Wade craft a daylight soundtrack that feels uplifting, soulful and quietly purposeful, decorated by jazz fusion textures, house-influenced rhythms and the subtle sounds of the city.
Across ‘as day breaks’, Jerk and longtime collaborator Martine Wade soundtrack a journey through daylight, tracing the small emotional shifts that occur as we re-enter the world and move through it. Singles ‘steppin out’, ‘wait’ and ‘alarmed’ form the backbone of this narrative, each capturing a distinct moment within the arc of a single day. From the funk-tinged momentum of ‘steppin out’, which reflects the intersection between individual identity and collective life, to the spiralling, mantra-like calm of ‘wait’, the EP balances motion with stillness. ‘alarmed’ pushes the energy further, evoking the first fully conscious moments of the morning and the weight we carry into the day, before breaking back into its central theme with a subtle sense of optimism. Together, the singles present a cohesive portrait of presence, movement and awareness, rooted in electroacoustic jazz, soulful grooves and melodic repetition.
Opening the project and acting as its emotional anchor, focus track ‘still dreaming’ bridges ‘as night falls’ and ‘as day breaks’. A downtempo, jazz-led composition, the track inhabits the liminal space between sleep and wakefulness, filled with the sounds of singing birds, shimmering chimes, and a gentle, understated progression of musical ideas. Neither fully night nor fully day, ‘still dreaming’ captures the essence of the project as a whole, something ethereal, suspended and quietly reflective, setting the tone for everything that follows.
The brainchild of composer, producer and multi-instrumentalist Joni Kinney, Jerk is now several albums and EPs deep into an eclectic and evolving catalogue. Drawing influence from beat-driven experimentation, classic soul, jazz fusion and electronic textures, Jerk’s work continues to blur boundaries while remaining emotionally grounded. Beyond music, Joni is also an active writer and video essayist, expanding the project into broader creative spaces.
