Info for REDEFINE

Three years after the release of her successful debut album ALMA, Munich-based singer, pianist and composer Alma Naidu has now released her long-awaited new album REDEFINE.

With her debut album Alma, produced by Wolfgang Haffner, the Munich-born artist reached an impressive number 10 on the GfK Jazz Charts in 2022. The extensively trained, academically educated, and award-winning Alma Naidu had already earned great respect from critics and the media. After more than 250 concerts in a wide range of line-ups (including the Jazzwoche Burghausen, the Nublu Festival New York, and the Leverkusener Jazztage), Alma Naidu now presents her new album Redefine – 13 original songs of great intensity, musical diversity, and lyrical depth, spanning the space between singer-songwriter, pop, and jazz. The arrangements range from classic band settings to string orchestras to intimate solo pieces with vocals and piano. The themes include friendship, love, inner growth, as well as equality and the questioning of gender roles. Featured are high-caliber guest artists such as Mark Lettieri (Snarky Puppy), Raphaela Gromes, Nils Landgren, Jason “JT” Thomas, Lisa Wulff, and Simon Oslender. Redefine, produced by Alma Naidu herself, is a bold and finely balanced masterpiece.

‘With her new album ‘Redefine’, Alma Naidu once again demonstrates her extraordinary talent as a singer, composer and creative sound designer. The music is well thought out, sensitively arranged and at the same time deeply emotional. This album is an artistic statement, a carefully crafted concept - audibly matured, matured in heart and mind and then translated into sound. Everything here consistently follows Alma Naidu's vision. The sonorous contributions of outstanding instrumentalists and the excellent production give the whole a class that goes far beyond the ordinary.’ (Jacek Brun, jazz-fun.de)

Alma Naidu

Alma Naidu
is a singer, composer and lyricist based in Munich, Germany. She was described as 'one of the most promising singers on the German scene' by Süddeutsche Zeitung, the magazine Jazzthing praised her 'delicate, wonderfully clear voice with absolutely perfect intonation'. The renowned drummer and producer Wolfgang Haffner recognized her talent immediately; he discovered Alma in 2019 and introduced her on his album 'Kind of Tango' (ACT, 2020).

After studying jazz singing at the University of Music and Theatre in Munich from 2016, she then spent a year at the Royal Academy of Music in London, where she studied with the renowned singer and ECM artist Norma Winstone.

At the age of just 25, she has won at the Gasteig competition, Jugend jazzt, the Kurt Mass Jazz Award, this year's BMW Welt Young Artist Jazz Award and lately the Bavarian Prize for Emerging Artists.

After delighting the audience with her band at performances in Munich and all over Germany as well as live stream performances during the Corona crisis in 2020 and 2021, the singer is now starting to release her own original music.
