Info for Come Before Winter
Come Before Winter is the debut album for jazz trumpet artist David Champagne. David is known for his fiery, soulful playing and for his big, warm, brilliant sound. His compositions have strong memorable melodies and inviting styles. He has surrounded himself with a stellar group of musicians with whom he has shared musical experiences for years. This band, The Champagne Jazz Quintet (CJQ), is a powerful and clear musical force that communicates on a high level. There is a special artistic connection that takes place when a group of musicians truly enjoy being together. The CJQ is comprised of pianist Scott Giddens, saxophonist Todd DelGiudice, drummer John Lumpkin II, and bassist Dennis Marks. The band is joined by the unbelievable Michael Dease on trombone and baritone saxophone.
Recorded on March 3-4 at the Studio at NFS Ranch in Elkton, Florida, Come Before Winter was engineered by Ryan LeRoy and Aaron Swihart with additional leadership from Mica Bethea. Mixing and mastering was done by the legendary Dave Darlington at Bass Hit Studio, New York, NY. The project was produced by the incomparable Ulysses Owens Jr.
“I first heard the phrase ‘come before winter’ in a Bible passage where a man named Paul is asking his young protege Timothy to visit him in prison. He has some simple requests: ‘Bring my cloak. Bring my books. And do your best to come before winter’. To me, this simple phrase represents true friendship and trust. It’s a call to do what you need to do without wasting time. It says don’t wait for tomorrow. Be dependable, be there for those you love. I want this album to bring people joy, to make them think, and remind folks why they love jazz.”
