The second album in the recording series dedicated to Gregor Joseph Werner is characterised by darkly shimmering hues between suffering and redemption. In his Requiem of 1763, Passiontide motets and instrumental oratorio introductions, Haydn’s largely unknown predecessor astounds with his contrapuntal artistry, spirituality and expressiveness. An insider’s tip for church music!

Once again la festa musicale focuses on the music of Gregor Joseph Werner, Kapellmeister and Joseph Haydn's immediate predecessor at the Esterházy court. This album illustrates Werner's creative and artistic treatment of the themes of mourning and penance. In three introductions to Holy Week oratorios, he displays astonishing fugal sophistication, and in the two Holy Week motets he opts for an exciting combination of sixteenth century compositional techniques with bold, progressive harmony. Contrapuntal finesse is also revealed in the dramatic Requiem with soloists, choir and trombones. Finally, the polyphonic Sonatina leads to what is probably his last work, the a cappella setting of the penitential psalm "Miserere mei Deus", written by Gregor Joseph Werner in the style of the famous Miserere by Gregorio Allegri.

With his second album, Lajos Rovatkay continues the highly acclaimed series featuring the music of Gregor Joseph Werner. A further recording is scheduled for release next year.

Magdalene Harer
German-born Soprano Magdelene Harer excels in a variety of music styles. She appears on the international stage performing repertoire spanning seven centuries, in oratorio, song and chamber music.

Under the baton of Konrad Junghänel, Jarosław Thiel, Raphaël Pichon, Alexander Liebreich, Paul van Nevel, Philippe Herreweghe, Peter Neumann, Hermann Max and Jörg Straube, she has given concerts in many of Europe’s most prestigious venues, including Koelner Philharmonie, International House of Music (Moscow), National Forum of Music (Wroclaw), Tchaikovsky Concert Hall (Moscow), and National Theatre (Sarajevo).

Magdalene’s current focus is ensemble and consort singing and she regularly appears with some of Europe’s most celebrated period ensembles, such as Cantus Coelln, Collegium Vocale Gent, Huelgas Ensemble, Ensemble Pygmalion and ensemble polyharmonique.

Equally at home on the solo platform, she has appeared with numerous orchestras, among them Concerto Köln, Lautten Compagney Berlin, Nordwestdeutsche Philharmonie, Göttinger Symphonieorchestrer, Neue Philharmonie Westfalen, Neue Düsseldorfer Hofmusik, Münchener Kammerorchester and others.

Anne Bierwirth
studied singing and historical interpretation practice with Prof. Heidrun Kordes at the Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst in Frankfurt am Main. She is a sought-after concert and oratorio singer. Her repertoire ranges from Renaissance, Baroque, Classical and Romantic works to contemporary compositions. Concert engagements have taken the contralto to numerous cities in Germany and Europe as well as on concert tours to Brazil, China, Russia and South Africa. She has worked with Marcus Creed, Thomas Hengelbrock, Hermann Max, Wolfgang Schäfer, Michael Schneider, Florian Heyerick and Winfried Toll, among others. She is a guest at numerous festivals, such as the Bach Festival Leipzig, the Telemann Days Magdeburg, the Rheingau Music Festival, the Staufen Music Week and the Zermatt Festival.

Markus Flaig
Born in Horb am Neckar, Markus Flaig studied with Prof. Beata Heuer-Christen in Freiburg and with Prof. Berthold Possemeyer in Frankfurt am Main; since autumn 2006 he has been working with Carol Meyer-Bruetting.

In 2004 Markus Flaig was a prize-winner at the International Johann Sebastian Bach Competition Leipzig. He recently recorded his first solo album for edition chrismon together with the Ensemble Alta Ripa, featuring cantatas by Bach (BWV 82), Telemann and Graupner.

While still studying church music, he received his first guest contract at the Städtische Bühnen Freiburg for the role of Azarias in Benjamin Britten's church parable "The burning fiery furnace". Since then he has appeared in operas by Strauss, Schwehr, Monteverdi, Purcell and Rameau on the stages of Baden-Baden, Schwetzingen, Bayreuth, Hanover and Frankfurt. Since 1997 he has been working on an extensive song repertoire with the pianist Jörg Schweinbenz.

Concert tours have taken the bass-baritone throughout Europe, Korea and to Japan for a tour under Masaaki Suzuki, and in autumn 2010 to South America for performances of the B minor Mass with the Thomanerchor Leipzig. Numerous radio, television and CD productions under conductors such as Thomas Hengelbrock, Hermann Max and Konrad Junghänel bear witness to his wide-ranging repertoire.

Daniel Trumbull
For Daniel, communication with the audience is central to his search for the ideal concert experience. As a scholarship holder of Concerto21, the podium for the 21st century concert, he had the opportunity to develop this idea further. His intimate harpsichord recitals now touch people all over Europe, for example at RADIALSYSTEM V in Berlin, Handel House London or the Köthener Bachfesttage.

In addition to his solo performances, he is a sought-after ensemble musician, a permanent member of the Lauttencompagney Berlin, he performs with la festa musicale with Ensemble Polyharmonique, in productions of the Komische Oper Berlin or the Staatstheater Nürnberg, as well as at festivals such as the Thüringer Bachwochen or the Händelfestspiele Halle. With his ensemble Tr!Jo he won prizes at the Berlin Bach Competition and the Biagio Marini Competition.

As harpsichordist of Red Bull Flying Bach, he interprets J.S. Bach's "Well-Tempered Clavier" in major halls worldwide, including the KKL Luzern, the Berlin Konzerthaus, the Sydney Theatre or the Chicago Civic Opera.

Daniel Trumbull regularly assists at various master classes and has been teaching at the Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler Berlin since 2016. In 2015 he won first prize at the Broadwood Horniman Harpsichord Competition in London. Daniel Trumbull studied with Mitzi Meyerson at the UdK Berlin and with Jean-Marc Aymes and Dirk Börner at the CNSMDL Lyon.
