Info for L'Amico Fritz (Remastered)

It can be said that L’Amico Fritz is an opera that was written as a challenge or wager. Pietro Mascagni was then coming back to the surface after the dazzling revelation which was Cavalleria rusticana (Rome, Costanzi Theatre, on 17 May 1890), with which he launched what was to be the new trend of the Young Italian School, though there had been earlier hints of what was to come in the melodrama of the Milanese Scapigliatura movement (Boito, Gioconda’s Ponchielli, the young Catalani and others). The composer from Leghom had also gone through a difficult peri od of gestation with regard to the Nordic legend of Guglielmo Ratclifffrom Heine(streaked with romantic satanism, this opera was to take, between revisions and afterthoughts, all his youthful period, and was to be performed at the Scala in 1895, four years after the first production of Fritz).

The CEL -Teatro di Livorno Teatro di tradizione started a wide pluriennal project which aims at bringing out and rediscovering the production of the greatest fellow -citizen musician, as well as the authentic leading figure of the “verist” opera: Pietro Mascagni. This route, initiated in 1988 with the acclaimed reproposal of Iris, continued the following year with another not well known Mascagni’s opera,Il Piccolo Marat, and culminated in the triennium 1990 -1992, with the celebrations of the centenary of three juvenile creations: Cavalleria Rusticana (‘90), L'Amico Fritz (‘91) andI Rantzau (‘92). These ones were carried out with productions of high artistic level, involving not only interpreters of proved prestige but also young talented conductors and singers. in order to guarantee the necessary generational replacement: from the great specialists of the verist interpretation to the most accredited representative of the last generations. The different phases of the project were supported by a large series of collateral cultural initiatives: meetings, lectures, stages about Mascagni’s production and the Italiann contemporary opera during the fervent season of the Giovane Scuola and the Verism. ...
