Info for Mahler: Symphony No. 5 in C-Sharp Minor (Live)

No. 5 by Gustav Mahler was greeted with standing ovations from the audience – one more reason to release the recording of the concert on the Tonkunstler’s own label.

Mahler’s Fifth Symphony, opening with its dark trumpet solo, is today one of his best-known orchestral works. It was not always so: «The Fifth is a cursed work», noted the composer after the premiere in Cologne in 1904. The symphony’s fourth movement, the yearning, delicate Adagietto, achieved immortality after being used as the score to Luchino Visconti’s classic 1971 film «Death in Venice», if not before.
