Info for Navigation Without Numbers (Remixes)

Composer/electronic musician George Hurd is following up his 2016 Innova Recordings release, Navigation Without Numbers - a hyper-rhythmic, electro-acoustic album for his group The Hurd Ensemble - with a remix EP featuring reinventions of his tracks from that album. Some of the most exciting and innovative composers and musicians from the US and Europe were chosen to rework his iconic pieces in their own style, creating a kaleidoscopic record that spans the stylistic spectrum. From exploding, beat-driven thematic explorations (Joel St. Julien, William S. Braintree and George Hurd) to beautifully quiet tape-manipulated piano variations (Danny Clay), to pulsing modular-synth tracks that expand on microscopic sections of the music (Hainbach), each one runs in fascinating, unpredictable directions.

“Composer George Hurd doesn’t subscribe to any of the monolithic definitions around musical categories. [He] successfully closes any preconceived gaps between electronics and traditionally composed music and what the listener is left with is sometimes warm, sometimes angular but always accessible. Overall, a captivating first effort, not confined by any of the many micro-genres in play.“ (Karl Ackermann, All About Jazz)

George Hurd
Hurd Ensemble

George Hurd
is a San Francisco-based electro-acoustic composer / electronic musician whose work focuses on electronic music, classical composition, and the endless world where they intersect. He heads the electro-acoustic group The Hurd Ensemble, performing his compositions for chamber ensemble and electronics. His work often fixates on the role of memory and location in music, basing pieces on sounds recorded from his life and on his extensive travels, each encapsulating a specific memory from the place and time they were recorded. His newest endeavor and foredooming record, Echolocation, takes this idea even further, as a travel-centric subscription project that focuses on his music made from location-specific audio recordings captured while traveling across Europe, New Zealand, North America and Africa.

Hainbach
is a Berlin-based electronic music composer and performer who creates shifting audio-landscapes that THE WIRE has called "One hell of a trip". His music has been released on Opal Tapes, Seil Records, Spring Break Tapes, Limited Interest and Marionette. He is also a well-known YouTube personality that explores esoteric music equipment and avantgarde music techniques.

Joel St. Julien
is a San Francisco-based composer, musician, songwriter and sound artist. Joel has written music for documentaries, short / feature films, and dance. He is a firm believer in experimentation/fusion with acoustic and electronic elements in sound oscillating through escapism and the mysticism of the present tense.

Danny Clay
is an American composer whose work is deeply rooted in curiosity, collaboration, and the sheer joy of making things. Working closely with artists, students, and community members alike, he builds worlds of inquiry, play, and perpetual discovery that integrate elements of sound, movement, theater, and visual design. Recent collaborators include Kronos Quartet, Eighth Blackbird, Third Coast Percussion, and Volti.

William S. Braintree
is a composer and producer stationed in San Francisco, CA. His unique brand of electronic music is often fast and colorful. Heavily melodic with a penchant for glitchy drums, he fuses elements of 8-bit video game music, baroque, and drum and bass.
