Info for Time Passes
A journey deep into the heart of music and stillness from Australian jazz legends David Jones on drums and percussion, Ben Robertson on bass and Tony Gould at the piano: Time Passes is an album of dear friends communicating on the level of subtle sounds and signals.
The project grew out of recent concerts at Montsalvat and Beleura in Victoria, as well as a rich legacy of performances and recordings over many years – a synergy that has developed and been refined in the deep listening and responses of improvisation. Starting often from just sketches, small maps of intersecting ideas to begin the musical conversation, the album explores the universal language of sounds, rhythms, melodies, harmonies, textures, colours, space and blends, grounded in the gentle yet strong experience of friendship and musical understanding.
‘It’s such a pleasure to play in the atmosphere of kindred spirits,’ says Jones, ‘enjoying the music and each other’s company.’

David Jones
is a virtuoso musician, one of the most innovative and musical drummers in the world. With his ‘whisper to roar’ dynamics, seamless technique and mastery of multi-layered polyrhythms, David is a man with a unique musical vision, enriching his sounds with the inner silence that he finds through meditation. His mesmerising drum solos are dramatic, humorous, surprising and powerful. Among the many artists with whom David has collaborated are Don Burrows, James Morrison, Paul Grabowsky, Joe Chindamo, Marcia Hines, Mike Nock, Tommy Emmanuel, Slava Grigoryan, Synergy, The Idea of North and John Farnham.
David was recipient of the Melbourne price for Music 2010 and also had 2 Drumkit Concertos written for him with Orchestra in Japan and Melbourne.
Ben Robertson
has been part of the Australian jazz scene since the late 1980s, performing and recording with Don Burrows, Joe Chindamo, Lisa Young, Dale Barlow, James Morrison, Vince Jones and the West Australian and Tasmanian Symphony Orchestras, as well as many visiting artists including Lee Konitz, Mark Murphy, Claire Martin, Barbara Cook and Eartha Kitt. He is a harmonic and listening musician; a great asset to any ensemble both as an improvising soloist and arranger. A graduate of the Victorian College of the Arts, he has also studied in Chennai, India, with renowned Carnatic violinist V.S. Narasimhan.
Dr. Tony Gould
An extraordinary pianist, composer and pioneering music educator, Dr. Tony Gould has brought a unique voice to Australian jazz, improvisational and classical music over the course of a career spanning more than 50 years. He has performed with countless Australian and international artists including Clark Terry, Mark Murphy, Ernestine Anderson, Ronnie Scott and Don Burrows, appeared with orchestras and ensembles including Orchestra Victoria and the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, and supported artists and groups such as Dave Brubeck, Oscar Peterson, Sarah Vaughan, Jean Luc Ponty, Ray Brown, and the Art Ensemble of Chicago.
