Info for Mozart: The Milanese Quartets - Lodi Quartet

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s six ‘Milanese’ quartets constitute a milestone in his artistic activity. Written between Bolzano and Milan between 1772 and 1773, they came a few years after the Quartet K80/73f that he had composed in Lodi during his first Italian visit. More than that work, these six pieces – conceived before Mozart left the Milanese public with his third and last work for the Lombard capital, Lucio Silla K135 – constitute one of the first organic sets of string quartets ever conceived. Though based on the model of Haydn, they reveal Mozart’s modern spirit, capable of following a new path and enriching it with his own personal contribution.

Thirty years after the first and only recording of these works on period instruments by the Festetics Quartet, here is the recording debut of a young Italian ensemble, with the bonus of the first ever historically informed recording of the Quartet K156’s original second movement.

VenEthos Ensemble

VenEthos Ensemble
was founded in 2016 by Giacomo Catana, Mauro Spinazzè, Francesco Lovato and Massimo Raccanelli, with the purpose to propose innovative interpretation on original instruments of the great string quartet repertoire of the XVIII and XIX centuries.

The members of the ensemble have enhanced their professional and musical experiences alongside renowned artists such as A. Marcon, G. Carmignola, L. Van Dael, H. Kurosaki, H. Beyerle, B. Weil, H. Muller, J. Meissl, Trio di Parma, I Sonatori de la Gioiosa Marca, the Kuss Quartet and the Quartetto di Cremona, studying deeply the great chamber music repertoire and the historically informed praxis.

Since the beginning of its activity, the quartet has received great audience success and has been invited by renowned music societies such as Amici della musica di Padova, Mozartiana Festival in Gdànsk (Poland), Società Veneziana di Concerti, the “Concentus Moraviae” Festival (Czech Republic), Asolo Musica, Circolo culturale Bellunese.

In 2017 the VenEthos Ensemble has been selected for the project "Le Dimore del Quartetto" and in 2018 it has performed alongside Giuliano Carmignola at the Early Music Festival in the Dolomites "Arte e musica tra Pelmo e Civetta"; the following year the quartet has participated as "ensemble in residence" at the same festival under the invitation of Andrea Marcon, with whom the ensemble has played in several concerts.

VenEthos Ensemble members currently perform as section principals as well as soloists in some of the leading period-instrument orchestras, e.g. Venice Baroque Orchestra, La Cetra Barockorchester Basel, I Sonatori de la Gioiosa Marca, L'Arte dell'arco, Opera Stravagante and Il Pomo d’Oro. They are used to play in world renowned concert halls and music festivals such as the Wiener Musikverein, Berliner Philharmonie, Salzburger Festspiele, Royal Albert Hall and Barbican Centre in London, the Royal Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, Théâtre des Champs- Élysées in Paris, Carnegie Hall in New York, Tokyo Opera City, Tchaikovsky Concert Hall in Moscow and the Mariinsky Concert Hall in St.Petersburg etc.

The name VenEthos consists in a pun between “Veneto”, the four musicians' homeland and “Ethos”, an ism of Ancient Greece, which refers to the belief that music could strongly influence human ethics.
