Info for Wunderkind Felix

Robert Schumann called Mendelssohn the Mozart of the 19th century given his mastery of both the keyboard and composition at such an early age. On "Wunderkind Felix" conductor Patrick van der Linden and Ars Musica pay tribute to the precocious work of Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy with this album of pieces the young master wrote between the ages of 14 and 19. Ars Musica presents a reorchestration of the 1st Symphony for chamber orchestra which explores the flexible orchestral settings of Mendelssohn's youthful compositions. This is paired with the equally youthful String Symphony No.10 and his Kyrie, which is performed by the Ars Musica Chorus and Orchestra. Soprano Nanette Mans and the Ars Musica Chorus join the orchestra to perform the Cantata 'Wer nur den lieben Gott lasst walten' and his setting of Ave maris stella, both written in 1828 when he was a mere 19 years old.

Nanette Mans
studied Classical Singing at the Codarts conservatory with baritone Henk Neven. She can often be heard as a soloist in, among other pieces, Bach's Matthew Passion and Johannes Passion, Handel's Messiah, Vivaldi's Gloria and Magnificat, Mendelssohn's Psalm 42 and many cantatas.

Nanette is also very active in chamber music. Since 2018 she forms a soprano-organ duo with organist Gerben Budding and since 2019 a lied duo with pianist Mieke Verduijn and she regularly collaborates with other musicians.

As a soloist, Nanette received masterclasses from Margreet Honig, Christianne Stotijn, Sophie Karthäuser and Marcel Reijans. In addition, she followed the Udo Reinemann International Masterclasses in Brussels together with pianist Mieke Verduijn.

Her passion for singing arose with ensemble singing, so Nanette has a lot of experience in this field and she can often be heard in an ensemble. She currently sings with Vocal Ensemble Piacevole (Gerben Budding), specialized in early music, the Cantores Martini (Remco de Graas) and the Ars Musica Chamber Choir (Patrick van der Linden).

Ars Musica Orchestra
The professional orchestral musicians of the Ars Musica Orchestra find each other in their passionate desire to make music. The orchestra is brimming with young talent; their pleasure in playing is palpable for the audience. The best basis for an impressive experience!

Led by chief conductor Patrick van der Linden, the orchestra plays programmes that make connections between geniuses like Bach and Beethoven and new eras. In this way, Ars Musica takes you on a musical journey. Besides its own programming, the Ars Musica Orchestra regularly fulfils an artistic role in a larger context, such as national commemorations or thematic celebrations.

Patrick van der Linden
is an inspired conductor and music theorist who inspires making music together. He studied choral conducting, orchestral conducting and music theory at various conservatories. At Rotterdam Conservatoire, he was identified as a high potential and graduated with distinction.

An analytically skilful and creative musician who is an idealistic optimist in life, he constantly undertakes initiatives to transfer knowledge of music during various musical projects. This drive and passion for music is in his genes; Patrick sang in choirs from childhood and was a choral conductor as early as sixth grade in high school.

In 2008, Patrick was the founder of Ars Musica, which grew up under his artistic direction. He is a principal with the Ars Musica Concert Choir, Chamber Choir and Orchestra. He also founded the chamber choir Canticum Amicorum and is active as conductor of the Zeeuws Vocal Ensemble, the Haags Toonkunstkoor and Merwe's Oratoriumvereniging. Working with and developing young musical talent is right up his street. His current teaching position at the Royal Conservatoire in The Hague is therefore entirely in keeping with his musical career. He previously taught at Rotterdam Conservatoire (2013-2018).
