Info for Vision Bach Vol. 8 - The First Cantata Year
On October 18, 2025, Volume 8 of the edition Johann Sebastian Bach: The First Cantata Year will be released by hänssler Classic. With this release, Hans-Christoph Rademann and the Gaechinger Cantorey focus on works that Bach composed between February and April 1724 for Estomihi, the Feast of the Annunciation, and the two Easter holidays. These stations mark key high points in the church year—from the Way to Jerusalem and the Annunciation to the joyous Easter celebrations. The performers include Catalina Bertucci (soprano), Miriam Feuersinger (soprano), Marie Henriette Reinhold (alto), Alex Potter (alto), Patrick Grahl (tenor), Tobias Berndt (bass), and Matthias Winckhler (bass). The recordings were made between March 19, 2023, and April 9, 2024, at concerts in Stuttgart and Arnstadt as part of the VISION.BACH series and the Thuringian Bach Weeks.
The cantatas selected for Volume 8 impressively reflect the breadth of Bach's expressive possibilities. Jesus took to himself the twelve (BWV 22), known as one of the Leipzig "trial cantatas," opens the collection with a dramatic alternation between the Evangelist, the Word of Christ, and choral interjections. With "Thou true God and David's Son" (BWV 23.2), Bach presents a theologically weighty setting, which reaches a particularly intense concentration in the concluding "Christe, du Lamm Gottes." A festive addition is "Heavenly King, welcome" (BWV 182), a composition originally written in Weimar that Bach performed in Leipzig on March 25, 1724. The recording reaches its festive climax with the two Easter cantatas: Der Himmel lacht! Die Erde jubilieret (BWV 31.2), a magnificent resurrection music with trumpets and timpani, and Erfrut euch, ihr Herzen (BWV 66.2), in which Bach transformed a Köthen congratulatory cantata into Easter festive joy.
