Info for Thousands of Ways

Violinist, vocalist and storyteller Susan Reed has crafted a wide-ranging career that includes multiple nationally renowned books and recordings for children. Constantly composing, this album celebrates a year of that writing: reflecting on life, love, the pandemic, politics, and of death and dying. Forming an inspired band to realize these works, Susan's links to jazz, classical, fiddle and klezmer music provides fertile ground for guitarist Craig Wagner, bassist David Friesen and drummer Steve Barnes' orchestrations. Thousands of Ways' mix of instrumentals and songs range from the joyful "Flying My Kite" and "Ribbons in the Wind," to the subtle soundscape of "Desert Flower" or the tabla driven funk of "Cat Got Your Tongue."

"Susan Reed serves as a double threat, swinging on violin and singing with a folkish allure with her team of Craig Wagner/g, David Friesen/b and Steve Barnes. On vocals, the team comes across at times like a jazzy Fairport Convention, pretty on the pizzicato'd "Flying My Kite", bluesy and dark as she pants out "Cat Got Your Tongue" and swinging with ..." (Jazz Weekly, George W Harris)

"The violinist, vocalist and storyteller Susan Reed has enjoyed a diverse and exceptional career, and here she reflects on life, love, the pandemic and politics with help from Craig Wagner's guitar, David Friesen's bass and Stever Barnes' drums. "Flying My Kite" starts the listen with warmly plucked strings, as Reed's comforting and eloquent voi ..." (Take Effect, Tom Haugen)

Susan Reed
is a contemporary violinist, vocalist, storyteller, recording artist, author and educator from the Boston area. From classical to fiddle, gypsy to jazz, Susan interprets the world through sound. Susan combines her musical artistry with storytelling, crafting original shows that celebrate our humanity. She is equally adept in collaboration, adding her lyrical line to the musical mix of the moment.

Susan has a BM and MM in violin performance and Suzuki pedagogy from Cleveland Institute of Music. She teaches nationally and internationally, and also trains new teachers in her workshop, Teach Smart.

Susan's palette of strings expands to include guitar, banjo, and dulcimer. Susan has composed and recorded many award-winning CDs as well as books with Barefoot Books and Villegas Editores. She has been recognized and honored by Parents' Choice, Mom's Choice, Creative Child Magazine, Tillywig, and NAPPA.

Susan's daughters are also musicians and perform together in their family string band, Tatu Mianzi, playing musical styles that circle the globe. The band also hosts style and improvisation workshops to young string players interested in exploring beyond the classical tradition.

Susan's current passion is America's music, jazz. Susan performs with several bands in the Boston area, including her own jazz combo, bringing jazz shows to communities through vocals and violin. Common to her performances is her trademark warmth and wit, and her conviction that music has the power to broaden people's understanding of the world around them.
