Info for No crown!

Adorable Harp Sound: In 1654, Queen Christina of Sweden abdicated and devoted the rest of her life to the arts. Her journey took her via Innsbruck to Rome, where she became one of the leading patrons of music of her time and mingled with the city’s most prominent figures.

Margret Koell joins the Queen’s circle and has put together a program of Christina’s favorite pieces from opera and chamber music. Here we encounter works by Froberger and Buxtehude, as well as arias from operas by Cesti, Marazzoli, Rossi, and Pasquini. She has arranged this music into a dramatic narrative—essentially an opera without words, featuring various acts, interludes, an overture, and a finale, all performed as a solo on the triple harp. Margret Koell once again proves herself to be a leading specialist in the Baroque harp, and with "no crown!", she brings her audience, in an unconventional way, very close to one of the most dazzling personalities of the 17th century: Christina of Sweden.

Margret Koell explores the universe of historical harps. Especially she is devoted to harps with multiple sets of strings. For her listeners, she opens the doors on a sensuous baroque landscape that sparkles and enchants.

Both as a soloist and as a continuo player, Margret Koell works with leading baroque orchestras, e.g. Il Giardino Armonico, Accademia Bizantina, Europa Galante, B’ Rock, Concerto Köln and Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin. Her solo recitals, duos and trios are brilliant examples of technical perfection and passion for the music. One of her concert highlights was the inauguration of the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg, where she performed as a duo with countertenor Philippe Jaroussky.

Margret Koell is also the founder of the interdisciplinary platform Harfenlabor, through which she has been programming and presenting the Innsbruck Harp Biennale since 2021.

Margret Koell, triple harp

Margret Koell
is one of the leading figures in the field of historical harp performance.

As an ensemble director and harpist, she performs regularly with Il Giardino Armonico and the Accademia Bizantina. Engagements have also taken her to numerous opera houses and concert halls, including the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden in London, the Opéra Garnier in Paris, the Theater an der Wien, the Bavarian State Opera, the Teatro alla Scala in Milan, the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg and the Pierre Boulez Saal in Berlin, as well as to international festivals such as the Salzburg Festival.

She also performs regularly as a chamber musician; since 1988, for example, as a member of the contemporary chamber music ensemble Die Knödel, or with renowned chamber music partners such as Roberta Mameli, Aphrodite Patoulidou, Benedikt Kristjánsson, Stefan Temmingh and Michele Pasotti.

Since 2013, she has released a total of eight CDs of her own recordings; her solo debut album, *L’arpa di Partenope*, was awarded the Diapason d’Or. Her most recent album to date, *Sound Stories*, released in 2024 with Stefan Temmingh, was shortlisted for the German Record Critics’ Award and received a ‘5 diapason’ rating. In addition, in 2016 she founded the Harfenlabor platform, which brings together a diverse range of artistic and academic formats centred on the historical harp. A key part of this is the international Harfenbiennale Innsbruck festival, which she has directed since 2021.
