Info zu The Stranger in the Mirror

Jake Mason Trio bring the hammond soul-jazz sound to The Count's in the spirit of Jimmy Smith and Brother Jack McDuff.

The Stranger in the Mirror is the debut album from the Jake Mason Trio. Stepping out from the drivers seat of Cookin’ On 3 Burners, Mason dives firmly into the 60’s organ trio sound making a record that is both delicate and fiery.

Featuring James Sherlock (Guitar) and Danny Fischer (Drums) the trio weave their way through bluesy soul-jazz, blazing vigour and soundtrack-esque territory. “I love the place where Jazz and Soul meets” says Mason. “It has a simplicity that is so warm and welcoming combined with a complexity that is exciting and makes you move”

Recorded on the east side of Melbourne, the trio captured the moment in the tradition of the classic Jazz recordings on labels such as Prestige and Blue Note playing live in the room, using vintage recording techniques and adding a pinch of modern inspiration. The result is a dynamic sound that has space and transparency but with just the right amount of grit and crunch. While this is the first official recording of the trio, Mason, Sherlock and Fischer are no strangers, having played together for over 20 years in many guises; Melbourne - a melting pot for great music and culture.

Jake Mason
is a Melbourne based ARIA-nominated songwriter, producer, educator and touring artist, with over twenty years experience in the music industry. A graduate of Melbourne’s Victorian College of the Arts, the multi-instrumentalist and prolific songwriter has released twelve albums; gained platinum sales worldwide; and established his own label, Soul Messin’ Records and production house.

As organ player, leader and founding member of funk & soul outfit Cookin’ On 3 Burners, with whom he released 4 albums, Jake co-wrote and co-produced numerous songs, including the Kungs Vs Cookin’ On 3 Burners chart topper “This Girl”, which hit the #1 spot in 10 countries and reached the Top 10 in 37 territories. Nominated for ARIA song of the year, the track became the most shazammed dance song of 2016 worldwide.

Published by Origin Music, Jake has television synch credits including Underbelly, Vogue, Peugeot, Just Jeans and Sky Sports to name a few. An accomplished live performer, he has worked as a side man with artists such as Richard Clapton, Mark Seymour and Hugh Jackman and has co-written with Kate Ceberano, Eric McCusker and Tania Doko to name a few.

Taking off his hat as one third of Cookin’ On 3 Burners to focus on his jazzier inclinations, Jake has teamed up with Danny Fischer on drums and James Sherlock on guitar to form the Jake Mason Trio, a project revolving around the sound of 60s jazz & soul with the organ firmly in the forefront. Their first official recording “The Man In The Mirror” will see the light of day in May 2018.

The Jake Mason Trio
features Danny Fischer (drums), James Sherlock (guitar) and Jake Mason (Hammond Organ). With influences from the golden era of organ trios (Smith, McDuff, and McGriff) and music from today’s melting pot, the trio weave their way through familiar sounds with a modern twist.
