Camille Saint-Saëns (1835-1921) was a tireless traveler, during his life took care of literature, poetry, mathematics, science and natural phenomena, archeology, astronomy and botany. His entire production is kaleidoscopic: he experiences new aspects of music, such as the sound of the first ever soundtracked film when he was over seventy (L’Assassinat du duc de Guise, 1908).

This album includes the complete piano quartets by the composer. The first, written between 1851 and 1853, was published a year after his death. It is an early work with references to Liszt and Schubert.

Quartet decidedly more mature his Op 41, composed in 1875, and considered one of the cornerstones of French chamber music together with Franck and Fauré works.

Quartetto Avos Ensemble

The Avos Quartet
was founded in 2007 at the National Academy of 'Santa Cecilia' in Rome by the violist Diana Bonatesta.

The quartet has immediately drawn international interest following its participation to the two most important Italian chamber music competitions (both members of the World Federation of Geneva). In 2009 it was awarded the International 'Vittorio Gui' Award in Florence, followed by a Second Place (First unassigned) at the International Award 'Premio di Trieste' and the 'Premio Amedeo Baldovino' for the best Brahms interpretation of Piano Quartet in G minor, Op. 25. It also received the 'Audience Award' by the Italian publication 'Il Piccolo di Trieste'. In 2010 it was awarded an absolute Second Price at the 'Salieri Zinetti International Competition held in Mantova and Verona. It also successfully participated to the Mirabemt Magrans International Competition winning the Third Prize (the only Italian ensemble succeeded to the finals) and the Rospigliosi Musical Competition, this time winning absolute First Prize. Still in 2010 it has won the Monte dei Paschi Prize and the prestigious Diploma of Honor at the worldwide known Accademia Chigiana.

The quartet has followed some of the most renowned musicians, including Dario De Rosa, Renato Zanettovich, Maureen Jones, Enrico Bronzi, Felix Avo, Alfonso Ghedin, Rocco Filippini and the Alban Berg Quartet; with whom it is currently studying at the prestigious Hocschule fuer Musik und Tanz in Cologne.

Although the quartet has been active for only four years, it has performed in more than one hundred concerts both in Italy and abroad (the Roma Tre University, the Viterbo University, the Alighieri Theatre in Ravenna, the Verdi Theatre in Trieste, the City Theatre in Florence, the Verdi Theatre in Pisa, the Borromini Sacristy and the D. Pamphili Palace in Rome, the Chigiana Academy in Siena, Music University of Bologna, the National Academy of Santa Cecilia, the Petrassi Hall in Rome, the Fioravanti Society of Prato, the Arts Academy Foundation, the New Colosseum Theatre in Rome, the Mancinelli Theatre of Orvieto, Siena, Viareggio, Campobasso, Jesi, etc.).

It has performed for the National Academy of Santa Cecilia, the Italian Embassy in Bucarest, and the Sinopoli Chamber at the Parco della Musica Auditorium in Rome. In 2009 it has also performed abroad in Japan and Holland, having a huge success in both tours. While in Japan the quartet held a seminar on Chamber Music at the University of Tottori. The quartet has already committed much of its schedule in the upcoming months with some of the most renowned institutions such as the Verdi Theatre in Trieste, 'La Fenice' Theatre in Venice, Serate Musicali of Milan, the Società Filarmonica of Rovereto...

The quartet has recorded for Suonare and (two discs) OnClassical.
