SOMM RECORDINGS is pleased to announce a sparkling recital of Virtuoso Piano Transcriptions spanning two centuries from Bach to Gershwin by pianist Alessandro Taverna.

During its peak popularity in the century from 1820, the art of transcription provided access in both the home and the concert hall to the riches of the symphonic and operatic repertoires through the conduit of the piano.

Recorded as part of the 2018/2019 Piano Series at Turner Sims, Southampton, Alessandro Taverna celebrates a lost art that made great music available to the widest audience in an era before the first recordings and radio.

Treated to a masterly re-imagining by Rachmaninov, Bach’s Third Violin Partita opens a recital that also showcases Taverna elegant virtuosity at the keyboard.

A characteristically combustible re-working of themes from Mozart’s Don Giovanni, Liszt’s Réminiscences de Don Juan takes full advantage of the piano’s full orchestral range and sounds all the more remarkable in Taverna’s by turns poetic and powerful performance.

Liszt’s transcriptions of three Schubert songs reveal his sensitivity to the originals and his appreciation of the piano’s ability to conjure fantasy to mesmeric effect, his ‘paraphrase’ of Verdi’s Rigoletto a miniature marvel for the piano.

Echoes of Liszt can be heard in Ernst von Dohnányi’s delightfully dancing re-working of Johann Strauss the Younger’s Schatz Walzer and in George Gershwin’s electric, effervescent arrangement of his own Rhapsody in Blue, a thrilling display of pianistic fireworks brilliantly realised by Taverna.

Alessandro Taverna’s previous recordings for SOMM include Sonatas by Nicolai Medtner (SOMMCD 0142) and music by Debussy and Ravel (SOMMCD 0168), of which Fanfare magazine said: “Boldness and refinement keeps the playing interesting at every moment… Taverna distinguishes every textural strand with clarity… this superb release will add lustre to his reputation”.

Als er 2009 das Finale des Internationalen Klavierwettbewerbes von Leeds erreichte und Chopins 1. Klavierkonzert spielte, „wurde die Welt von tiefer Schönheit erfüllt“, so ein Kritiker. Seither zeigt Alessandro Taverna eine außergewöhnliche, sehr konstante künstlerische Entwicklung als einer der faszinierendsten, wohl musikalischsten Pianisten seiner Generation. Weltweit reißen die Anfragen, Taverna zu hören, nicht ab.

Der 28jährige Alessandro Taverna hat zahlreiche Preise bei nationalen und internationalen Wettbewerben gewonnen, darunter allein 2009 den 2. Preis beim Internationalen Klavierwettbewerb in London, den 1. Preis in Minnesota und den 3. Preis beim legendären, oben bereits erwähnten Wettbewerb in Leeds. 2010 konnte er den Premio Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli der Klavierakademie von Eppan erringen, und 2012 verlieh ihm der italienische Staatspräsident Giorgio Napolitano den Premio Giuseppe Sinopoli. Auftritte führten Alessandro Taverna als Solist durch ganz Italien und zahlreiche Länder Europas, in die USA, Kanada und Südafrika. Zudem tritt er regelmäßig mit herausragenden Orchestern auf, darunter das London Philharmonic Orchestra, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, Orchestra del Teatro Olimpico/Vicenza. Mehrere Rundfunk- und Fernsehaufnahmen in Italien, Slowenien und Südafrika.

Seit 2009 ist Alessandro Taverna Stipendiat des Keyboard Charitable Trust, London. Auftritte in den Steinway-Häusern von London, Hamburg, Berlin, München und New York sowie in Castleton/Virginia (dem Festivalort des Dirigenten Lorin Maazel) gipfelten in einer Einladung Maazels an den jungen italienischen Pianisten, mit ihm und den Wiener Philharmonikern auf Welttournee zu gehen.

1983 in Venedig geboren, studierte Alessandro Taverna bei Laura Candiago Ferrari an der speziellen Musikschule Fondazione Musicale Santa Cecilia in Portogruaro, die er mit Auszeichnung abschloss. Es folgte ein mehrjähriges Studium bei Piero Rattalino in Portogruaro sowie bei Franco Scala, Leonid Margarius (eines Schülers der legendären Regina Horowitz in Kharkov/Ukraine) und Boris Petrushansky an der bedeutenden Accademia Pianistica Internazionale ‚Incontri col Maestro' in Imola. Nach Erhalt des Diploms setzte Taverna seine Studien 2009 bei Sergio Perticaroli an der Accademia Santa Cecilia in Rom sowie bei Arie Vardi an der Hochschule für Musik, Theater und Medien in Hannover fort. Seit 2010 hat Alessandro Taverna einen Lehrauftrag an der Fondazione Musicale Santa Cecilia in Portogruaro.
