Die Musikindustrie spukt jedes Jahr neue Rock ‘n’ Roll-Sternchen aus, die dann für einen Sekundenbruchteil berühmt sind, um anschließend sofort wieder in der Versenkung zu landen. Albert Castiglia ist einen anderen Weg gegangen. Als ein Mann, der einst sang: „The road to riches is playing guitar, that’s why I’m living inside my car“, verbrachte er zwei Jahrzehnte damit, die Karriereleiter zu erklimmen und sich den Respekt der Fans zu verdienen. Solid Ground ist jetzt die Belohnung.

Die Blues-Rock-Szene wird nun entdecken, was die langjährigen Fans schon kennen: einen Künstler, bei dem jeder Song direkt aus der Seele zu kommen scheint, der die Gitarre beherrscht und zudem Songs schreibt, die die Wünsche, Ängste und den Herzschmerz der Hörer ausdrücken können. „Solid Ground ist mein bisher bestes Album“, erzählt der 44-jährige Bandleader. „In diese Aufnahmen habe ich mehr Zeit, Liebe, Blut, Schweiß und Tränen investiert als in alle anderen zuvor. Und das hat sich gelohnt. Ich liebe jeden dieser Songs und ich bin sicher, dass für jeden Geschmack etwas dabei sein wird.“

Er hat recht. In den Fat Rabbit Studios in Glen Ridge, New Jersey aufgenommen ist dieses Album nicht nur „solide“, es ist etwas Besonderes. Es gibt zahlreiche musikalische Höhepunkte bei denen Alberts Gesang und Gitarrenspiel durch sein Team aus Matt Schuler (Bass/Vocals), Bob Amsel (Schlagzeug), Jeremy Baum (B3/ Piano/Wurlitzer), Lou Bevere (Gitarre/Vocals) und Debbie Davies (Gitarre/Vocals) und nicht zu vergessen Dave Gross als Produzent unterstützt werden. Doch die Stars dieses Albums sind letzten Endes die 14 Songs auf Solid Ground.

Den Auftakt macht „Triflin“, bei dem der Funke sofort durch Alberts gefühlvolles Gitarrenspiel überspringt, während seine Stimme von einem Leben voller schöner und bitterer Erinnerungen erzählt („We all have our share of problems, damn near every day…“). Ärger mit Frauen ist ein wiederkehrendes Thema, das sowohl im Song „Keep You Around Too Long“ als auch bei „Have You No Shame“ verarbeitet wurde („I saw you last night under them parking-lot lights, wrapped up in someone else’s arms…“). Doch neben persönlichen Problemen gibt es auch Songs, die einen größeren, sozialen Aspekt betreffen: So beschwört er uns, den Tag zu nutzen – oder wie er es formuliert „Put Some Stank On It“ – und beklagt die von Kriegen zerrissene moderne Welt auf „Love One Another“ („It seems like hate is on the rise, it’s enough to bring tears to my eyes…“).

Als vielseitiger Musiker mit Weitblick können auch Alberts Songwriting-Künste überzeugen, so zum Beispiel bei dem Latin-angehauchten Instrumental „Little Havana Blues (Arroz Con Mango)“ oder bei „Celebration“ und selbst als er sich dem Stones-Song „Sway“ annimmt, ist seine Klasse nicht zu überhören. Dies wird nicht zuletzt auch bei dem akustischen Slide-Blues „Hard Time“ deutlich: „I was born in a broke-down Chevy. Now I feel like it’s on me heavy. I was raised in a dirty junkyard, my only friend was this guitar…”

Das mag die Wahrheit zwar etwas verbiegen, doch Albert hat durchaus eine bewegte Vergangenheit. Geboren wurde er am 12. August 1969 in New York als Sohn eines Italieners und einer Kubanerin. Als er fünf Jahre war, zog die Familie nach Miami, Florida, wo er dann im Alter von zwölf Jahren seine erste Gitarrenstunde bekam. Der Funke sprang sofort über.

Nichtsdestotrotz mussten Rechnungen bezahlt werden und obwohl er sein professionelles Debut bereits 1990 mit Miami Blues Authority hatte (und später zum ‚Best Blues Guitarist‘ durch die New Times in Miami gekürt wurde), verband er die Gigs weiterhin mit seinem Job als Sozialdienstmitarbeiter. Trotzdem erlangte er immer mehr an Bekanntheit, vor allem nachdem ihn Buddy Guys Star Mundharmonikaspieler Junior Wells singen hörte und in seine Soloband zu mehreren Welttourneen einlud. Auch nach Wells Tod 1998 blieb Albert weiterhin am Ball: In den späten 90er Jahren spielte er mit der aus Atlanta kommenden Sängerin Sandra Hall bei nationalen Tourneen und jamte mit Größen wie Pinetop Perkins oder John Primer.

Doch für ein Talent wie Albert Castiglia konnte die Nebenrolle nicht für immer genug sein. Von Beginn an hatte er diese kreative Ader, die nur in einer Solokarriere und dem Schreiben eigener Songs gipfeln konnte. Und so brachte er 2002 sein Debut Burn heraus, gefolgt von A Stone’s Throw (2006), Keepin On (2012) bis hin zu Living The Dream (2012).

Jede neue Veröffentlichung war ein weiterer Schritt nach vorne, verfestigte Alberts guten Ruf und sicherte ihm ausreichend gutes Material, um seine immer besser besuchten Liveshows zu füllen. Jetzt, im Jahr 2014, erscheint Solid Ground. Mit der Begeisterung von Fans und Medien im Rücken, großen Tourplänen (u.a. zusammen mit Christina Skjolberg und Laurence Jones beim Blues Caravan) und der Unterstützung durch sein neues Plattenlabel wird dieses Album für Albert ein gewaltiger Schritt nach vorne. Vergesst die Rock ’n‘ Roll-Sternchen und die Blitzerfolge. Albert Castiglia ist ein Talent, das Bestand haben wird.

Albert Castiglia
(pronounced “ka-STEEL-ya”) is Keepin On – and much more. With the release of Castiglia’s 5th CD Keepin On, August 2010 on Blues Leaf Records (his third CD on this label), Albert is doing exactly what the title of the CD suggests. Having opened for ZZ Top, Elvin Bishop, and The Radiators, he’s quickly becoming a favorite high energy performer at festivals across the country.

Castiglia’s history is as colorful as his home town of Miami, Florida, going back to 1990 when he played in a local Miami Band, The Miami Blues Authority, and won awards locally for “Best Blues Guitarist.” He got a big break after meeting the legendary Junior Wells in 1996, and soon became Junior’s lead guitar player before Wells died in 1998. Albert toured the U.S. and Europe with Junior and then found himself in Chicago when Junior passed. Soon though, he was touring again with Sandra Hall.

He returned to South Florida after deciding to launch his solo career and went to work on his first CD, Burn (2002), a self-release, collaborating with his long time friend, Graham Wood Drout of Iko-Iko. Drout’s visceral, yet literary songs became the perfect vehicle for Castiglia’s soulful vocals. In 2006, he released A Stone’s Throw, his second album and first release for Blues Leaf Records, which included two of Drout’s insightful songs, “Big Toe” and “Ghosts of Mississippi.” Castiglia and Drout also released a live CD together, titled The Bittersweet Sessions, in 2005.

His 2008 CD, These are the Days (Blues Leaf Records), contained five original Albert Castiglia songs, including a tribute to his mentor Junior Wells, “Godfather of the Blues.” The cover songs from These are the Days paid tribute to a wide range of styles and artists from Bob Dylan, Nappy Brown and Fenton Robinson. These are the Days earned him a Blues Music Award nomination for “Song of the Year” for his original, “Bad Year Blues.” Castiglia was nominated again by the Illinois Blues Blast Awards and this time walked away a winner for “Song of the Year” for “Bad Year Blues,” as well as being nominated for the “Sean Costello Rising Star Award.”

Most of his new CD release, Keepin On, was recorded live with very few overdubs. He enlisted five session musicians to help on the project, including harmonica master Sandy Mack, who played on “I Could Not Ask for More,” a Peter Green song. Mack had played on “Ghosts of Mississippi,” a track from Albert’s A Stones Throw album in 2006. According to Castiglia, “He kicked butt then and he picked up where left off on this session. ”Keepin On features five new original tunes, plus other covers of songs by John Lee Hooker, Mack Rice, T-Bone Walker, Robert Nighthawk and Bob Dylan

“I did two acoustic songs and enlisted dobro genius Toby Walker for them,’ says Castiglia about the new CD. “Toby is world renowned and has even taught at Jorma Kaukonen’s Fur Peace Ranch in Pomeroy, Ohio, a number of times. Toby came in originally to play on a song I wrote called ‘Sweet Southern Angel.’ That went so well and quickly, that we wound up doing another number for the hell of it, Robert Nighthawk's ‘Murderin' Blues.’ I can honestly sum up those two tunes with one word, ‘Magic.’ He did a great job and I hope we get to work together again.”
