Info zu The Art of the Bass Choir

At the top level of New York City's jazz, Latin, and studio scenes for four decades, bassist Lincoln Goines has put together this highly ambitious recording for his debut as a leader. With elegant textures inspired by Bill Lee's New York Bass Violin Choir and Steve Swallow's upper register explorations, Goines created a collage of styles and moods, built on a collection of favorite tunes and textured within the parameters of clearly voiced low end instruments—indeed, an "exquisite jungle of bass!" Pulling in ten world-class bass friends including Ksenia Vasileva, Victor Wooten and John Patitucci, and drummers such as Robby Ameen and Dennis Chambers, Goines has created a one-of-a-kind listening experience, celebrating the musical range of the instrument and the fellowship of those devoted to anchoring ensembles through time.

"The spirit of the bass has possessed me from an early age. Of all the myriad influences, I can recall being particularly inspired by the elegant textures of Bill Lee’s New York Bass Violin Choir and by the pioneering upper register explorations of Steve Swallow. From that point on it became a goal of mine to perform music in a bass ensemble format and today I stand on the shoulders of the many low-end giants that came before me.

I began actualizing this vision over the past several years as a professor at the Berklee College of Music, putting together arrangements for student ensembles. From what now has become a considerable catalog, it was a labor of love to select the pieces to feature on this project. This was done in collaboration with family and many excellent musical colleagues/former students whom I have the honor to call my friends. I surely drove them all crazy… but I had a ton of fun making this recording.

On these tracks I attempted to create a collage of styles and moods: groove, lyricism, tradition, virtuosity, sonic math, and directed chaos, textured in a context where harmonies could resonate outside the confines of keyboard temperament and within parameters of clearly voiced low end/non-tonal instruments. Indeed, an “exquisite jungle of bass!” (Lincoln Goines)

"Playing more varieties of bass that could be listed in a review, Lincoln Goines celebrates the bass with a wide variety of guests including Tom Kennedy, Goins Vasileva, Victor Wooten, Susan Hagen, Gal Aviram and Mike Pope (am I missing anyone?) supported by a clever support team of drummers. The choice of famed stick man Dennis Chambers is a ... (Jazz Weekly, George W Harris)

"Here's something different: California-born, New York-based Lincoln Goines is one of the best bassists of his generation with a career rooted in the jazz world and recordings with Dizzy Gillespie, Idris Muhammad, Paquito D'Rivera, Carly Simon and other giants. But he delivers azure notes aplenty in this thoroughly enjoyable, classy and primarily in ..." (Chicago Blues Guide, Marty Gunther)

Lincoln Goines
Bassist, composer, author, and educator Lincoln Goines has distinguished himself as one of the premier bassists of his generation. As a sideman, his resume reads like a who's who of the pop, jazz and Latin world. A native of Oakland, California, Goines studied piano and trumpet in grade school. In his teens at the apex of the psychedelic/soul culture explosion of the 1960's he chose music as his path and began playing electric and acoustic bass, studying formally with Vancouver BC Symphony bassist/cellist Sydney Keats, virtuoso soloist Gary Karr, and later with jazz bassists Steve Swallow and Eddie Gomez.

Now a mainstay of the New York City jazz, Latin, and studio scene for over four decades and noted for versatility and fluid style, he has recorded and performed internationally with an extensive list of premier artists including Dizzy Gillespie, Sonny Rollins, Gato Barbieri, Carly Simon, Dave Grusin, Paquito D'Rivera, Michel Camilo, Tania Maria, Eliane Elias, Michael Brecker, Bob Berg, Bob Mintzer, Mike Stern, and Wayne Krantz.

Goines is a published composer in his own right and his compositions can be heard on recordings by Dave Valentin, Ryo Kawasaki, and most recently on the album Night and Day, a collaboration with drummer Kim Plainfield released in 2002. In addition, he is a Professor of Bass at the Berklee College of Music in Boston and a faculty member at the Bass Collective in New York City. Goines is a senior student of Tai Chi Chuan Grandmaster William C.C. Chen and is one of his certified master instructors. He is also a contributing author for the book Bass Lessons with the Greats and co-author of the book and video Funkifying the Clave: Afro-Cuban Grooves for Bass and Drums.
