Violin-lovers can relive the magic between Competitions, because 2017 winner Ioana Cristina Goicea’s new album, Recital, was recently released on the Atoll label.

The album includes repertoire by George Enescu, (a nod to Ioana’s Romanian heritage), and music by Johannes Brahms and Franz Schubert completing the offering. The recording is based on the finale live performance of Ioana Cristina’s 2018 winner’s tour with Andrey Gugnin (winner of the 2016 Sydney International Piano Competition).

Ioana described it as “one of the most intensive, tiring and exciting experiences for me so far.”

“I would say this positive pressure made us give everything in that important moment, and hopefully the people listening to our recording will feel it,” she says.

An album is never just the work of the musicians – and Ioana is quick to acknowledge this.

“From the beginning, we [Andrey, myself and Wayne, the producer] just understood and interacted perfectly with each other,” she says.

The producer’s role is usually invisible to the listeners, but it’s incredibly important. Wayne Laird, the producer of this album says he views his role as “giving the artists the best opportunity to achieve a result they will be proud of later. This includes recording multiple takes if they want to rerecord sections they’re not happy with. I’m expected to have a musical point-of-view and share it frequently if necessary. But with Ioana Cristina and Andrey they are not only exceptional players, but they had toured this programme together, so it was easy to feel almost redundant as they played to their own, combined, very high standard!”

If the album was recorded last year, you might wonder why you’ve had to wait so long… Wayne gives us the answer about what goes on behind the curtain in postproduction. “On location, while recording, we are not hearing the result coming from the microphones in an ideal listening environment. Later, separate from the recording, the sound and the performance is evaluated more objectively, repairs are made from recorded takes to remove audience or environment noises, and the multiple microphones used at the sessions are mixed at various levels into a finished sound,” he says.

gehört zu den herausragenden Violistinnen der jüngeren Generation. 2017 gewann sie den ersten Preis der Michael Hill Violin Competition in Neuseeland, wo die Presse ihre leidenschaftlichen Auftritte feierte und sie zum „neuen Stern am musikalischen Firmament“ ernannte. 2018 wurde sie erste Preisträgerin des Deutschen Musikwettbewerbs in Bonn und Preisträgerin des Internationalen Indianapolis Violinwettbewerbs in den USA. 2019 wurde sie Preisträgerin des Königin-Elisabeth-Wettbewerbs in Brüssel.

Sie gastierte in renommierten Konzerthäusern und bei Festivals in Europa, Asien, Amerika, Neuseeland und Australien. So war sie unter anderem im Concertgebouw Amsterdam, St Martin-in-the-Fields London, Melbourne Recital Centre, Bozar Brussel, Königin Elizabeth Saal Antwerp, in der Shanghai Concert Hall, im Rumänischen Athenäum, in der Townhall Auckland, im Staatstheater Heidelberg und in der Slowakischen Philharmonie Bratislava zu hören.

Solistisch spielte Ioana Cristina Goicea unter anderem mit dem Belgian National Orchestra, Orchestre Royal de chambre de Wallonie, George Enescu Philharmonie Bukarest, Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra, Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, Rundfunk Orchester Bukarest, Antwerp Symphony Orchestra, Beethoven Orchester Bonn, mit der Südwestdeutschen Philharmonie und der Philharmonie Baden-Baden. Neben ihrer Solistentätigkeit ist die junge Violinistin auch eine begeisterte Kammermusikerin. Sie ist Preisträgerin des ACM Trio di Trieste Kammermusikwettbewerbs 2015, bei dem sie im Duo gemeinsam mit dem Pianisten Andrei Banciu den 2. Preis sowie den Young Award gewann. 2016 nahm sie als Stipendiatin an der Kammermusik-Akademie des Heidelberger Frühlings, 2017 an den Sommerlichen Musiktagen Hitzacker und dessen Akademie und 2018 an der Verbier Festival Akademie teil.

Ioana Cristina Goicea wurde 1992 in Bukarest, Rumänien, in eine Musikerfamilie geboren. Sie studiert bei Krzysztof Węgrzyn an der Hochschule für Musik, Theater und Medien Hannover. Zuvor wurde sie von Mariana Sîrbu an der Hochschule für Musik und Theater „Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy“ in Leipzig und von Petru Munteanu an der Hochschule für Musik und Theater Rostock ausgebildet.

Ihre Karriere wurde von der Alfred Toepfer Stiftung F.V.S., der Gertrud- und Hellmut Barthel Stiftung, dem DAAD, von ad infinitum Leipzig, der Live Music Now Hannover und der Werner Richard – Dr. Carl Dörken Stiftung gefördert. Seit Oktober 2017 ist sie Stipendiatin der Gundlach-Stiftung, Hannover.

Die Geige: Als Stipendiatin der Deutschen Stiftung Musikleben und Preisträgerin des 21. Wettbewerbs des Deutschen Musikinstrumentenfonds spielt Ioana Cristina Goicea eine Violine von Giambattista Guadagnini, Parma 1761, aus dem Besitz der Bundesrepublik Deutschland.
