A glance at the cover of his first LP shows us a 24-year-old Reinhard Mey standing against a backdrop of ruins, with nothing but his guitar in his hand. The bard and his song, accompanying himself – nothing more. That’s all it takes. That was almost 60 years ago, and he always kept it that way throughout the nearly 2,000 concerts of his major tours. On his first album from 1967, that wasn’t quite the case; there were already a few musicians in the studio with him. Across more than 28 further albums, Reinhard Mey has taken many successful risks over the decades, playing with large orchestras, experimenting with modern sounds and enriching his songs with the sounds of other instruments. Yet the song is the song; its soul needs no embellishment.

With *Schatzhauser*, the poet and singer-songwriter who has shaped the country and its people is now releasing his 30th studio album, almost 60 years after his first; for the first time in exactly 40 years, it is not being released in May as usual, but in September – and for the very first time ever, it was recorded entirely on his own in the studio!

Schatzhauser smiles warmly; he is wise and kind-hearted, just like the eponymous literary character created by Wilhelm Hauff. He leaves nothing out – not death, nor life, not tears, not laughter, and above all, not love.

We glimpse into melancholic corners of the soul and yet, in a wondrous way, are left feeling filled with hope.

The album hints at the beauty of the sunset, even though it marks the end of the day. Yet a summer sunset in the north lasts a very long time. *Schatzhauser* is Reinhard Mey’s subtle 30th album. Not a word was said here about the last one!

When Reinhard Friedrich Michael Mey was born in Berlin on 21 December 1942, he graduated from a French grammar school in 1963 with the French Baccalaureate and the German Abitur, only the band Radish Skiffle Guys, founded in 1957, and the group Les Trois Affamés from 1961 indicated an interest in music. Training as an industrial clerk at Schering AG in Berlin and beginning a degree in business administration did not yet point to Mey's later career in music. After six semesters, music broke through and Reinhard Mey abandoned his studies for music.

In 1964, his first chanson appeared and he performed at the Festival Chanson Folklore International. In 1967 he performed for Germany at the Knokke Festival in Belgium, and it was here that he received his first, French recording contract. In the same year he started performing in clubs and released his first studio album. So far there are 26 studio albums and 13 live records. There are LPs in Dutch and in French. In France he performs under the pseudonym Frédérik Mey because of the better pronunciation.

He has been on stage more than 1300 times and played a complete concert. His tours took him through Germany, France, Holland, Austria, Switzerland and Belgium. He achieved double platinum with a Dutch record from 1975. His biggest success from 1972 "Mein achtel Lorbeerblatt" with which he took one of three first places in the German album charts. He repeated the success in the German charts in 2007 and 2013. He has a gold record from 1971 and many will know his hit "Über den Wolken" from 1974.
