Info for Wet Dream (2023 Remix by Steven Wilson)

The late Pink Floyd keyboard player Richard Wright's debut solo album Wet Dream has been remixed by Steven Wilson. Richard Wright's debut solo album, 1978's Wet Dream, is slated for a reissue through Rhino/Parlophone Records on July 28, which would have been the late Pink Floyd keyboard player's 80th birthday.

The May 1978 release of Pink Floyd keyboardist Rick Wright's first solo album, "Wet Dream," coincided with guitarist David Gilmour's self-titled release. Both Wright and Gilmour went about their solo business, as Roger Waters hunkered down to write "The Wall" (1979) following the band's 1977 "Animals" album, and subsequent "In the Flesh" tour.

"Wet Dream," like Gilmour's solo effort, was recorded at Super Bear Studios in France, where both would return shortly after, to record "The Wall." (Wright recorded his material from Jan. 10, 1978, to Feb. 14.) Wright had been living in Greece at the time, in tax exile from his native England.

Wright produced the album himself, and used guitarist Snowy White, who had recently toured with the Floyd, as well as Mel Collins, a saxophonist who would continue to have associations with Floyd.

Wet Dream was self-produced and Wright wrote all the songs himself, except "Against the Odds", which was co-written with his then-wife, Juliette, who, as Juliette Gale, had provided vocals to a pre-Pink Floyd song "Walk with Me Sydney". Wet Dream was recorded at Super Bear Studios, Alpes-Maritimes, in early 1978, the same studio where bandmate David Gilmour would record his eponymous solo album just weeks after the recording of Wet Dream.

"Following the release of the 1977 album Animals and its accompanying "In the Flesh" tour, Pink Floyd went on hiatus, having become popular enough to support solo albums by bandmembers who were inclined to make them. Guitarist David Gilmour and keyboard player Richard Wright were. For his album, Wright assembled some of the backing musicians who had been accompanying Pink Floyd for years, in particular reed player Mel Collins and guitarist Snowy White. So it was no surprise that the resulting record, Wet Dream, sounded like outtakes from Pink Floyd sessions. Wright's keyboards had always been a major element in the Pink Floyd sound, and his singing and songwriting had also been a big part of the group's music, despite the increasing domination of Roger Waters. On Wet Dream, he was interested in providing typically slow, contemplative, keyboard-based arrangements and singing (on about every other tune) in a becalmed, echoey voice of marital discord and escape. Wright's conflict with Waters shortly would lead to his being dismissed from Pink Floyd (and then, bizarrely, hired back as a sideman), and in a sense his release of Wet Dream could be seen as an attempt to step out on his own. But the material, while pleasant enough, seemed more like music he might have written to work on with Pink Floyd if he still had as much input into the group as he had had back around the time of Dark Side of the Moon, rather than like an independent solo statement. It was hard to imagine anyone but Pink Floyd fans wanting to listen to such an album, and as it turned out not even enough of them cared, since the album sold poorly." (William Ruhlmann, AMG)

Richard Wright
Richard William Wright (b.July 28, 1943 – d. September 15, 2008) was an English pianist, keyboardist and songwriter, best known for his career with Pink Floyd. Wright’s richly textured keyboard layers were a vital ingredient and a distinctive characteristic of Pink Floyd’s sound. Wright frequently sang background and occasionally lead vocals on stage and in the studio with Pink Floyd (most notably on the songs “Time”, “Echoes”, “Wearing the Inside Out”, “Astronomy Domine” and “Matilda Mother”).

Though not as prolific a songwriter as his bandmates Roger Waters and David Gilmour, he wrote significant parts of the music for classic albums such as Meddle, The Dark Side of the Moon and Wish You Were Here, as well as for Pink Floyd’s final studio album The Division Bell.

Wright is ranked #5 on Digital Dreamdoor’s list of “100 Greatest Rock Keyboardists of All Time” and #8 on MusicRadar’s top 27.
